Week of December 3rd - December 9th, 2007 (US Ave $3.10)

Another Monday -- and boy was it painful trying to get to work this morning!!

Thanks to Ken and his ilk it was much better than it could have been but I'm not so sure I can maintain 45mpg anymore...

1F, no wind, clear:
  1. 43.4mpg for 22.4mi (Home to work )
The tank just keeps dropping and is now down to 46.6mpg over 417.4mi with 7.0g left and the guess gauge shows just 1 needle width over the 1/2 mark.

But hey, this is still better than what I was able to achieve back in April!!

Re: Week of December 3rd - December 9th, 2007

Rather chilly this morning, 17F IAT at startup. Tried something a little different this morning, partly because TorqueNada wants to 'idle' at about 2800-3000 rpm when first started at these temps. Drove through part of the neighborhood I usually don't in 3rd /4th with 'no throttle' to do some warm up of engine and drive train. I was thinking about something I read about some Japanese Prius drivers going for some distance / time to warm the ICE before doing P&G. I was aiming at getting the FWT up to about 120F or so, thinking that the engine idle while shifting gears will be reasonable, glides will be better, and hopefully do better FE for the trip to work.

I think it helped: 32.9 mpg for 11.8 miles at 17F. I believe it can be bumped up quite easily, as the first 1.5 miles or so seems to be long gentle uphill and has 4 stops signs, instead of 1 stop sign and 3 lights on my usual route 1. Of course, getting the block heater in will help even more...

Re: Week of December 3rd - December 9th, 2007

Nice and warm this morning 54 degree with no wind. It rained last night so there was a little water left on the road. Took the new route home today with absolutely no traffic encountered . One bad thing I've realized with this new route is once I turn into the neighborhood its pretty much all up hill, which stinks but is better than sitting in stop and go traffic.

76.2 for 4.1 miles.

39F here. Slight frost to scrape. Of course, I scraped it all and didn't use any heat or defrost. Coat and gloves. I'm considering a hat next.

53.2 mpg / 11.7 miles into work.

Tank steady at 52.9 / 155 / guess gauge at 3/4.

40.3. 30 something degrees. I think I am lucky right now to be getting 40 by the looks of things. It's better than the weekend.

42.0 MPG this morning after I got stuck behind a school bus. I don't know if I was late, or if the bus was early, but this was the first time I have even seen a bus on that section of road. It was right at the end of my commute too, so there was no time to make up for the loss.

Re: Week of December 3rd - December 9th, 2007

i think i get the prize for the coldest start this morning. MINUS 8! ouch. my heat gauge kept going up and down from 6 bars to 4 bars. i had to have heat, so i ran the fan. my backroads route was a little touchy because there are some spots where the road isn't quite clear yet, so i had to take it carefully. i really don't like winter driving any more.

have to laugh at DH, who took his truck to work yesterday because he got his honda stuck in the snow in front of our shed where he parks it. he got home too late to plow last night, but he did run the truck up and down the driveway a few times to at least give me a flat spot to aim for. i almost parked it at the end of the driveway, but a little bit of rocking and i finally got onto the road.

when i pulled into work, and you aren't going to believe me, because i had a hard time with it myself.........59MPG!
