Just Got My First Oil Delivery of the Winter
The price was $3.099/gallon of #2 Diesel Oil. I think the thermostat's gonna get set even lower.
Anyone else?

Re: Just Got My First Oil Delivery of the Winter
I squeaked in a fill a couple of months ago at $2.60-something
but even that hurt. Hopefully that's *it* for the winter, but
that all depends. The house is already buttoned up and downright
chilly inside.
.
Some late-night comic referred to lower thermostats as "living
like a European". Heh. There's much more clue about energy
over there than around here...
.
Bundle up an' hunker down, there's a storm a-comin'.

How is the oil used? I've always had an electric or natural gas heater, and the only other kind I've seen was the boiler/radiator type.

The furnace heats up the air from the intake ducts and forces it throughout the house similar to forced hot water systems.

Re: Just Got My First Oil Delivery of the Winter
But you store the fuel for this system on site, in your home? Like in buckets, or barrels, or gasoline containers? How much do you go through in a season?
I'm curious because in the systems I'm used to the energy source (electricity or NG) is piped right to your home, on demand.

Re: Just Got My First Oil Delivery of the Winter
Every home in New England that has oil heat - which is common around here - has an oil tank in the cellar; usually 250 gallons. Depending on the degree days, I can go through about 60% of that in 3 weeks in the winter if it's in the single digits outside for very long. We usually use less than most people, so I never get more than 175 gallons at a time, since it's automatically delivered based on the degree days by the oil company. But it really bites for the people that have 10 room Victorians, and retirees living on fixed income. So while we may both drive Prii, we still are gonna pay this winter.
