Mileage Logs
I've been filling out my mileage logs, and realized something. I am running E85 fuel which is 85% Ethanol and 15% Gasoline, and because of this I am categorizing my vehicle as "other" and pretty much sitting out there by myself at the very top of the logs.. As I am running on some gasoline (15%) shouldn't I be categorized in the gasoline logs? I rationalize this as being similar to hybrid’s, I’m just not using battery power to augment the gasoline, I’m using Ethanol.
If I were to log my miles based on gasoline used, it would break down something like this:
Using the 24mpg number I am currently getting. It takes me 10 gallons of E85 to travel 240 miles. Of those 240 miles I am burning 1.5 gallons of gasoline (15%). So, 240 miles / 1.5 gallons = 160mpg of gasoline…
Am I nuts? Should I stay in the “other” category? How about making an “alternative fuels” category?
Cheers,
Dave

Re: Mileage Logs
Don't mean to hi-jack this thread, but since the subject is so broad...
What EPA ratings should I use the original window sticker or the new standards?

Re: Mileage Logs
You're right Hateful, the mileage when using E85 drops. Actually, it really drops. I was consistently returning 26mpg in the Escort before the conversion, and immediately after the conversion it dropped to 19mpg. After careful tuning and implementing some creative driving techniques from this site, I was able to get it back up to 24mpg on E85. Thats mostly city driving too, so I am pretty happy with that.
Maybe the powers that be could create an E85 catagory, and I'd be the first
Cheers,
Dave

Re: Mileage Logs
Kermit,
If you use the drop down menus to pick your vehicle, it should automatically choose the correct EPA estimates. Hope that helps.

Re: Mileage Logs
Use the epa rating of the time you bought your car. Don't use the new ones unless your car was made after the new ratings.
As for running on E85. I believe that is one of the options in fuel type. Maybe I should have a modifier in there for the various gas types like e10 and e85. I'd put it in other or gasoline. It really doesn't matter.

Re: Mileage Logs
Hi Doc Willie:
___The DBase does not generate an update immediately but within a few minutes of upload, the new data will generate the new and updated sig stats.
___Are you ready to place your new sig in your sig
___The EPA you used was for the 08 (almost anyway as it is 48/45) and that places a whole different set of rules on the ratings if that helps?
___Good Luck
___Wayne
