Have you ever noticed that most of the off-topics relate to driving in some way?
Anyway I thought I'd describe the fun of driving during Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta. This is a great event, btw. Probably the largest ballooning event in the world, one of the most photographed events in the world (my hard drive is a good indication) and also on the list of the top 100 things to do before you die. I am crazy about it. Go in at 4 AM or so and do the dawn patrol (where about 25 balloons go up before dawn). I don't like going with anyone so I can concentrate. Ok, it might be like religion. I hope no one takes offense. I take it very seriously!
Though driving is less fun. The city easily doubles and truck traffic before and after is much higher (bringing in portapotties, vender stands, various corrals, etc.).
I was on a chase crew once. There is a chance that if you do this a few times you get to ride free, so that was my aim. Sadly, I got sciatica and can't do this anymore. But the chase crew truck just might be the ideal truck to follow as you a. don't want to be in its path. b. they go very slowly. These are the trucks looking for balloons. They drive around very very slowly almost never paying any attention to the road. One is on the radio; 1-2 looking for the balloon and another reading a map. I did the balloon watching as my dad used to call me "eagle eyes". I didn't disappoint. :-)
Then there is the hazard that you could see twenty balloons or many more flying around your car. THis is distracting!!
