Our petrol use compared to the rest of the world.
It's really amazing to see how much we use compared to the rest of the world. I knew it was a lot, but this graphic just shocked me.

From Economist.com
THE cost of filling up a Honda Civic's 50-litre tank varies hugely around the world. Where some countries subsidise, others tax heavily. Pity Turkish drivers, who fork out $93.83, according to Gerhard Metschies in Foreign Policy magazine. Re-nationalised oil companies and heavy subsidies keep Venezuelan motorists happy, though those in Turkmenistan fare even better, paying only $1.06 a tank. Despite protests over rising prices, filling up in America is relatively cheap at $31.06. Indeed, this may explain the country's enormous daily petrol consumption, which in 2003 was more than the next 20 biggest consumers combined. Although consumption will have increased in some countries since then, particularly in China, it is nonetheless easy to see why George Bush has introduced a plan to cut petrol consumption by 20% in the next ten years.

That's all I have to say about that.

Staggering. Haven't seen it put that way before.

I literally got sick to my stomach when I saw that the solid blue bar on the left represented the US.

Re: Our petrol use compared to the rest of the world.
Fascinating and horrifying.
Interesting that Canada uses close to the same amount of gas as China, though they have about one fortieth of China's population.
And India and Indonesia are #2 and #4 in population respectively (US is #3), and they're just blips on the stack.

Re: Our petrol use compared to the rest of the world.
It boggles the mind how lifestyles can be so drastically different in different parts of the world. And clearly the US will be hurting the most when the "brown smelly substance hits the vortex". That's such a great line. I have to laugh, because I'm a little freaked out by the situation.

Hi C0da:
___There is something about that graph that says we really are the ones that will take the harshest hit when the end game begins to show its uglier side
___Great link and chart!
___Fenrir, if there is a bright side, you have a heck of a platform for EV conversion sitting in your drive!
___Good Luck
___Wayne

Wayne, that's been the plan since day one. We may never see another car as light and aerodynamic as the Insight, unless it is much smaller. And aluminum doesn't rust. The VTEC-E under the hood might outlast affordable gas, though.
