2014 VW Golf Wagon or Jetta SportWagen?

Who cares as VWs most fuel efficient turbo diesel is destined for North America.

2014 VW Golf Wagon for Europe, Jetta SportWagen for us

Volkswagen is expanding its Golf range with the debut of the new Golf wagon as revealed at the 2013 Geneva Auto Show. Like the new Golf hatch, the Wagon is significantly lighter by up to 232 pounds than its predecessor.

For the first time, VW is also offering the Golf Wagon as a stand-alone and extremely fuel-efficient TDI BlueMotion model in Europe. The 110 hp wagon is the most fuel-efficient VW wagon ever built with an NEDC combined fuel economy rating of 71.3 mpgUS when equipped with the six-speed manual transmission.

The all-wheel-drive Golf wagon 4Motion will also debut in Geneva. It will be available with either the 105 and 150 hp TDI engines. Volkswagen says it has a Golf Estate TGI BlueMotion which is natural gas (CNG) fueled on the way as well.

According to the company, more than 1.8 million Golf wagons have been sold since it was launched 20 years ago. The versatility has been improved with the new model because the trunk volume with the seats in place has been expanded by 20 percent. When the rear seats are dropped, the load area increases by almost 9 percent.

The cargo area is now 41.5 inches long and with the rear seats down, it’s a solid 6 foot in length with the load height still at just 24.8 inches. For the first time, the wagon features a blind with a two-step roll-up mechanism to cover the luggage compartment: when it’s not needed, the blind can be stowed under the cargo floor.

In addition, the cargo floor is adjustable for height and can be locked in different positions. The split rear folding seat has also been completely redesigned and is more practical and easier to use, while there are now four bag hooks in the trunk area.

The new wagon is 12.1 inches longer than the hatchback, at 179.6 inches overall. In addition, the new Golf’s revised proportions— short body overhangs and a wheelbase that is increased from 101.5 to 103.8 inches— enhance its dynamic “look”.

The half of the taillight that's integrated in the trunk lid is larger than in the hatch and forms a longer parallel line with the graphic on the lower part of the trunk lid. In addition, a clear-cut difference between the wagon and the “classic” Golf exists in the design of the middle part of the trunk lid and the bumpers.

TDI BlueMotion goes its own way. In Germany, the Golf wagon will be available in the Trendline, Comfortline, and Highline equipment lines, but the TDI BlueMotion model will only be offered in Trendline and Comfortline trims. The TDI BlueMotion is not only different from the other models in the range from a technical standpoint, but also visually. From the front, the most fuel-efficient model can be distinguished by a partially closed radiator grille shutter, while flaps on the rear window rim identify it from the back. In addition, the model is equipped with an optimized underbody and wheelwell paneling, a 0.6-inch lower ride height, and super-low rolling resistance tires. There are also TDI BlueMotion badges on the front, back, and side of the body, as well as an optional “Clearwater Blue metallic” color.

Outside it is all “next-gen” VW Jetta Sportwagen

Like all new Golfs, the wagon is equipped with a Stop/Start system and battery regeneration mode. For the first time, it also has the new Automatic Post-Collision Braking System, which automatically slows down the vehicle when it is involved in an accident in order to further reduce its residual kinetic energy. Standard features on the European model include:
  • Seven airbags
  • PMs
  • External temperature display
  • Chrome trim around the interior vents
  • eco-HMI (fuel consumption-related information on the multi-function display / instruments)
  • Electronic stability control (ESC)
  • Height-adjustable driver’s seat
  • PW front and rear
  • A/C
  • Tilt and telescopic wheel
  • Center console with storage compartment
  • Electronic parking brake with auto-hold function
  • XDS differential lock
  • TPMS
  • Asymmetrically split and folding rear seat backrests, with remote unlocking
  • Electro-mechanical power steering
  • Dust and pollen filter
  • DRLs
  • 5-inch touchscreen
  • Central locking with wireless remote control
The PreCrash preventive occupant protection system is available for the new Golf wagon.

Other optional safety technologies that can be ordered with the wagon: Front Assist that includes the City Emergency Braking function; Automatic Distance Control (ACC); Lane Assist; Driver Alert system; road sign recognition and the latest generation of Park Assist; Light Assist and Dynamic Light Assist.

More new systems have been added, such as progressive steering; a newly developed ergonomic sport seat (ergoActive seat); a guard against using the wrong fuel in the diesels; and a new deluxe heated windshield. A driving profile selector is also a new feature: it has up to five modes—“Eco,” “Sport,” “Normal,” “Individual”, and “Comfort”. The last named is only available in combination with the DCC adaptive chassis control that is available for the first time on the Golf Variant.

Inside it is standard VW.

All Golf Variant models have touchscreen interfaces for their infotainment systems as standard. The new generation of systems is available with three different display sizes: 5 inches, 5.8 inches and 8 inches. Once you arrive at the mid-size screen, the displays have proximity sensors: as soon as the driver or front passenger moves a finger near to the touchscreen, the system automatically switches from display to input mode. The displays also have a function that lets users scroll through lists or browse CD covers in the media library with a swipe of the hand. Optional features include a high-end sound system by Dynaudio.

Drivetrain(s)

Just like the new Golf hatch, the wagon receives the much anticipated two newly developed engine families. The EA211 gas engine and the EA288 turbo diesel. All wagons are fitted with a Stop/Start system that reduces fuel consumption by a claimed maximum of four percent and a battery regeneration mode.

The new wagon has either a five- or six-speed transmission, depending on the engine. Most of the TSI and TDI engines may also be combined with a DSG dual-clutch automatic gearbox.

The EA211 turbocharged direct-injection gasoline engines produce 85, 105, 90, 122 and 140 hp.

The new EA288 TDI diesel engines are incredibly efficient. The three high-tech diesels make 105, 110, and 150 hp, and return between 71 mpgUS (NEDC so knock off 20 + % for US EPA homologation) for the BlueMotion and 56.0 mpg for the 150 hp version. Maybe a bit more fuel economy than our current world record setting Passat TDI.

Either way, the Jetta Sportwagen or Golf “Variant” wagon will be in VW showrooms here in North America soon and with the new EA288 series TDI, expect good things to come of it

And a beautiful backdrop to show it off against too.

Re: 2014 VW Golf Wagon or Jetta SportWagen?

Hi Wayne,
So what we have is a real possibility of a true sixty mpg at sixty mph TDi sport wagon coming to America. Looks good, any idea on what we can expect as far as the MSRP goes.

Al

Re: 2014 VW Golf Wagon or Jetta SportWagen?

Hi Al:

Probably $26 big ones to start as the current SportWagen is only a few hundred bucks less than the Passat now.

Wish we would get the sweet 1.6 TDI instead of the big thirsty one. But the reduced weight is nice.

I sure did read it , and it's a great car , but I'd prefer the 1.6 in a Golf hatch. VW doesn't think it will sell here , I guess.

Re: 2014 VW Golf Wagon or Jetta SportWagen?

Hi Edwin:

Maybe so but the 1.6L is not going to save any $'s up front and I am not so sure it would save any fuel either. The 2.0L provides one of those Goldilocks and the three bears scenarios. The middle is just right.

If you start making these TDs or Gassers work too hard, their FE goes straight into the garbage. Then again, we have not yet driven a 1.6L turbo diesel either? I just suspect that given our experience with the 1.4L turbo’s in both the Cruze ECO and Dart so equipped.

Re: 2014 VW Golf Wagon or Jetta SportWagen?

You may be right. We may never get a chance to really test one here. But we WILL get this new VW TDI and Mazda diesel , and they both have lots of potential.

I'd like to see what you can do with a Fiesta 1.0 Ecoboost. We've seen what you can do with the Fiesta 1.6. That Fiesta is one of the very few non-hybrid or EV cars on my list for my next vehicle.

Re: 2014 VW Golf Wagon or Jetta SportWagen?

VW builds some beautiful cars, but still scare me off with all of their issues. If they could nip those in the bud I would be all over a sexy wagon like that!
