Our Community comes through when “things” get tough.

Hi All:

___A huge and public thank you to Wayne Mitchell (Fire Engineer - Co-partner of the Chicago Prius Group) and Bradlee Fons (Bradlee - Owner of the Milwaukee Hybrid Group) who helped in a somewhat stressful situation.

___I went to pick up Cheryl’s (member of the Madison Hybrid Group) 02 Prius II for a CleanMPG review. She stores her backup Prius-I in the garage (her primary Prius II is her daily driver) and very rarely if ever drives it. When I arrived, its 12V was completely dead so it could not boot up the computers, close the relays to spin up the ICE off MG1 via the Traction battery, run the fuel pump, open the injectors to light her off or even display the current SoC. After jumping the 12V, I could do all of the above but she would only run for ~ 9 seconds and shut down w/ a Prius-I specific type of CEL. I pulled the SG-II out of the Accord which showed a P0000 code was set which in OBD-II code means it doesn’t know what it is (proprietary Toyota code(s)). Either way, there is a code locked. I cleared whatever it was and restarted. 9 seconds later, the same indeterminate code is set and she shuts down on her own. Cheryl does not have Internet access at home so we would have to head to the library to attempt to diagnose using the vast resources of the online community. I called Bradlee who called Wayne and under 10-minutes using a type of 3-way conference call of cel phones, Wayne logged into the Toyota Techline to see if a P0000 even existed? No luck there. We tried a few other things but all were dead ends. Although the outcome was not as successful as we would have hoped, within 10 minutes I was being assisted with some of the best minds in the business.

___There was a TSB on a fuel relay that may have reared its ugly head or the Traction battery was so low as to only be able to spin her up for the 9-seconds or so. Toyota will assist with bringing Cheryl’s back up Prius from the brink on Monday …

___A small suggestion to all. Get your cel filled with those around you since you never know when you are going to be out in the middle of nowhere and need some assistance. It was unbelievable how fast that assistance came through for me during a rough spot last night

___Good Luck and Thanks again Bradlee and Wayne.

___Wayne

Re: Our Community comes through when “things” get tough.

Very likely that the 9 seconds was it trying to crank and
not actually *running* at all. That's how the engine startup
works. Confusing as hell, leading to frequent misdiagnosis.
.
But it's generally agreed that a weak 12V can cause all kinds
of havoc. A meter is your best friend for first-line diag
of a prius; a scantool is next but in the meantime, your
ears are pretty useful too...
.
G'luck on the fix, please let us know what it really was..
.

Hi Hobbit:

___Yes, Wayne mentioned that early on. With the SoC showing a distinctive fall after the fourth attempted start, I thought we had better put her to bed and see what Toyota can do for her afterwards …

___I hope Cheryl takes it in tomorrow as I am very interested in the diagnosis as well? There was a TSB for a Fuel Pump relay but it was running fine the last time she had it out about a month or so ago

___Good Luck

___Wayne

Any word on what happened. If it was TSB EG011-03 I hope they didn't replace the fuel tank, usually just the ECM and fuel relay fix the majority.
