2014 Nissan Versa Note Preview

Following in the footsteps of the all-new 2013 Altima and 2013 Sentra, the 2014 Versa adds a 40 mpg highway rating to its arsenal.

Wayne Gerdes - CleanMPG - Jan. 15, 2013

2014 Nissan Versa Note hatch – Starting at $13,990 and offering a 31/40 mpgUS city/highway rating with the wide ratio Xtronic CVT.

The Nissan lineup receives another new offering with the introduction of the all-new 2014 Nissan Versa Note. The current first generation Versa is the best selling B-segment vehicle in the US with 113,327 sold throughout all of 2012. This is far ahead of the Chevrolet Sonic (81,247 vehicles sold), Hyundai Accent (61,004 vehicles sold), Ford Fiesta (56,775 vehicles sold) and Honda Fit (49,346 vehicles sold) during the same period.

What is unusual is that the all-new 2014 Versa Note will be sold along side the current Versa lineup??? The Versa Note is the next generation and far more advanced in every way over the current Versa.

Trims

Like most of the Nissan lineup, the Versa Note will arrive as an S, S Plus and SV grade levels (available with a Convenience package), SL Package and SL Tech Package.

Drivetrain

The Nissan Versa Note is powered by the same 109 HP and 107 lb-ft of torque 1.6L I4 that powers the 2013 Versa.

The engine includes a dual fuel injector system with the smaller nozzles delivering a spray approximately 57 percent finer than the previous generation helping achieve more complete combustion.

The valvetrain consists of a Twin Continuously Variable Timing Control (CVTC) system mounted on both the intake and exhaust ports.

Two transmissions will be available including a 5-speed manual (S model only) and an available next-generation Xtronic CVT transmission featuring a 7.3:1 ratio just like the midsize Altima.

Exterior

Not much different than every other B-segment hatch.

The 2014 Nissan Versa Note's features a much more modern style with improved aerodynamics (Cd of 0.298) with a first for the B-segment Active Grille Shutter. While a little drab up front with mild hood creases and a nonchalant grille, the wraparound headlight lenses add a little flash. From the side, a standard hatch layout with the highlight being the upper trim 16 in. alloys. In the rear, the rear spoiler is integrated and the sightlines to the rear sides and rear appear exceptional.

The Versa note incorporated a rather long for the B-segment 102.4-inch wheelbase (same as the current C-segment Corolla) with short front and rear overhangs.

Interior

Basic and very large.

The five-passenger Versa Note interior volume of 94.1 cu. ft. make it a force as it is larger than many of the “supposed to be” larger C-segments including the 2013 Focus, 2013 Corolla, same as the 2013 Mazda3 and just .5 cu. ft. smaller than the all-new 2013 Civic. In the back, the Versa Note offers a best-in-class 21.4 cu. ft. of cargo capacity.

That large cargo area includes a standard 60/40-split fold-down rear seat and an available Divide-N-Hide Adjustable Floor.

Lifting up the cargo floor board reveals a hidden area to keep valuables out of sight. Lowering the floor board creates a deeper well for carrying taller or bulky items.

The interior appointments begins with standard cloth seating, 4-way adjustable front bucket seats (S, S Plus) with 6-way seats available (SV), Fine Vision instrumentation, AM/FM/CD/Aux-in audio system with 4 speakers, 12-volt power outlet, front door pockets with bottle holders, dual front and rear cupholders and many more amenities. Heated front seats with upgraded seat cloth and stitching are also available, along with leather-wrapped steering wheel, chrome/silver accents, USB input with iPod control and steering wheel-mounted audio and Bluetooth controls.

Where the Versa Note stands out even further is a segment-first Nissan Around View Monitor. The system utilizes four small superwide-angle cameras mounted on the front, side and rear of the vehicle to provide a virtual 360° view of objects around the vehicle, helping the driver maneuver the car into tight spots.

The Around View Monitor is offered as part of the SL Tech Package, which also features heated side view mirrors and the NissanConnect with Navigation System with NavTraffic and NavWeather. The system includes a 5.8 in color touch screen display, Hands-Free Text Messaging Assistant, Streaming Audio via Bluetooth, Pandora radio capability (iPhone only for some reason???), POIs powered by Google and Google Send-to-Car.

Other available Versa Note features include Nissan Intelligent Key (proximity key) with Push Button start, integrated interface system for USB/iPod, RearView Monitor and SiriusXM Satellite.

The 2014 Versa Note is larger inside than its B-segment classification would make you believe.

Chassis

The Versa Note rides on standard 15 in steel wheels with full wheel covers and 185/65HR15 all-season tires, while 16 in alloys with 195/55HR16 all-season tires are available. Low rolling resistance tires are standard on CVT-equipped models.

Underneath, an independent strut front end and torsion beam rear end with stabilizer bars handle the suspension. An Electric power steering handles the turning.

Safety

Passively, 6 standard airbags including front, side and side curtains along with a high percentage of high strength steels in the chassis and passenger cell.

On the active front, the Versa Note includes Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC), Traction Control System (TCS), Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Electronic Brake Force Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist (BA).

A DOT mandated Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) is standard with an available Easy-Fill Tire Alert highlighting the vehicle.

Two interior colors will be offered including Charcoal and Wheat Stone. Eight exterior colors will be offered:
  • Metallic Peacock
  • MorningSky Blue
  • Metallic Blue
  • Red Brick, Brilliant Silver
  • Magnetic Gray
  • Super Black
  • Aspen White
The all-new second-generation 2014 Versa Note hatch goes on sale at Nissan's U.S. dealers this summer.

Re: 2014 Nissan Versa Preview

It's too bad the 5-speed manual is only available on the base "S" model. Also, it's too bad it's only a 5-speed.

Hmm. I wonder whether this thing with the manual can possibly beat the Accent on usable cargo space and on fuel consumption. Likely not, if it uses the same ridiculous short ratios as the old Versa.

That's because the Note is a hatchback, and will be sold alongside the current Versa sedan lineup. It replaces the current Versa hatchback, which has been the same since 2007 and did not get updated when the Versa sedan was redesigned a couple years ago. I doubt it will be sold alongside the current Versa hatchback for any longer than it takes for dealers to get rid of the old stock.

Probably the reason the refresh cycles have gotten out of sync is that although in North America these both get the "Versa" model name, they're sold in the home Japanese market as two different models under different names. The Versa Note label helps make this more clear, much like the Elantra sedan and the Elantra GT hatchback.

The old hatchback, was IMO a delightful little car, other than being handicapped by its outdated, inefficient engine. One of the old Versa's wonderful qualities was its VERY low noise level compared to the rest of the B-segment. Spending more to upgrade to the C-segment usually also buys you a quieter car, but the old Versa was quieter even than many C-cars. It was a really enjoyable rental car, with the super urban maneuverability you expect from a B segment, but low noise levels on the highway and the ability to converse without raising your voice that you do NOT expect from a B segment. The recent redesign of the Versa sedan was widely panned for a reduction in quality and sound deadening; we'll have to see if the same is true for the hatch, but since they are separate models, this remains to be seen.

The 5-speed MT in the S trim level is a disappointment. Especially since the previous hatchback came with a 6-speed. Nissan has long been on the list of automakers who appear to be actively trying to destroy the manual transmission by hobbling it, and it looks like they're stepping up the effort. Hopefully the S at least includes PW/PDL as standard equipment (as was true for the 2012 hatch) or offers it in a convenience package (as with the 2011 and earlier hatches).

Wayne: that cargo hold looks a LOT bigger than the old Versa hatch's. If you get the chance could you measure the fore-aft length of the cargo floor with the seats up? Looks like it might approach that of the Accent.

EDIT: If the current Versa Sedan's EPA figures are any guide (and the sedan's 31/40mpg is the same as the Note hatchback's), we can expect something like 27/30/36 for the 5MT. That is not exactly top of the class (it's more comparable to the better C-class cars now) but not horrible either, and a significant improvement over the previous MT's 26/31/28. For someone like me who would consider upgrading to C-class primarily for the lower noise levels, it might still be a good choice (if, as remains to be seen, the prev-gen's low noise levels are preserved).

That 6-speed had a very short 6th gear, perhaps to make the CVT look good. There's not much point in having 6 ratios when none of them are high enough to take advantage of the the car's potential.

That mileage is looking good. Will be interested in seeing where Nissan goes with the Versa.

Re: 2014 Nissan Versa Note Preview

Hi Dan:

Remind me to do the measurement at the Chicago Auto Show next week if you could. I have 10 pounds of $*&! I need to fit into a 5 lb paper bag beginning Monday and continuing through until the end of the month.

Phil, it sounds like you are considering a new car

Re: 2014 Nissan Versa Note Preview

Thanks Wayne. I'll try to do that. Fresh in my mind are measurements I took last night at our local auto show. For comparison with the rest of the class:

Accent=30" (within an inch of the Elantra GT FWIW).
Fit=28"
Rio=28"
Fiesta=26"
Mazda2=26"
Prius C=26"
Yaris=25.5", but feels like less because the load floor is ultra high and the space is so poorly configured.
Soul=22"

From the photo it does look as if the new Versa Note is in the Fit/Accent range, which would be really awesome.
