Europe’s All-in-One Slow and Quick Charging Solution

Surely not SAE approved yet but award winning nonetheless.

“Combined Charging System” wins 2012 eCarTec Award for electric mobility.

VW together with BMW and Daimler received the 2012 eCarTec Award -- an electric mobility award from the German state of Bavaria -- for their “Combined Charging System”. The jointly developed universal charging system was recognized in the category of “Energy, infrastructure, connection technology” for its innovation, future potential and global reach.

According to VW’s PR, one interface in the vehicle and the Combined Charging System provides single-phase charging with alternating current, quick AC charging with a 3-phase connection, a DC connection for home charging and ultra-fast DC charging from a dedicated charging station. This means charge a BEV/PHEV can be completed at any and all charging stations. The charging system is capable of replacing isolated regional solutions, which will accelerate the global market introduction of electric vehicles. Production BEVs and PHEVs by German automakers Audi, BMW, Daimler, Porsche and Volkswagen will begin in earnest in 2013 equipped with the new Combined Charging System.

Audi, BMW, Chrysler, Daimler, Ford, GM, Porsche and Volkswagen formed a consortium known as the 'Charging Interface Initiative', in which they are making a crucial effort in driving development of the Combined Charging System.
