Honda July 2012 Sales up 45.3%

Recovery is strong with a new Accord just around the corner.

http://www.cleanmpg.com/photos/data/501/2011_Honda_Accord.jpg
Wayne Gerdes - CleanMPG - Aug. 1, 2012

2012 Honda Accord – Starting at $21,480 with a mediocre 23/34 mpgUS city/highway rating.

The 2012 Honda Accord combines reasonable performance and efficiency.

Four engine variations are available, starting with a 177HP 2.4L I4 in the Accord LX, LX-P and SE Sedans. Next is the 190 HP 2.4L I4 that's standard in the Accord EX and EX-L sedans and all 4-cylinder coupes. The top-of-the-line 271 HP 3.5L V-6 is a complete waste and is available in the Accord EX and EX-L Sedan models and the Accord EX-L Coupe.

To improve fuel economy, V-6 models with AT are provided with Honda’s Variable Cylinder Management that can deactivate up to half of the cylinders while cruising.

Transmission choices vary by engine and trim with the base including a 5-speed MT (available on select I4 models) and a 5-speed AT (standard on select I4 models and all V-6 models). Steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters are standard on the Accord EX-L V-6 Coupe with an automatic transmission. A short ratio 6-speed MT is available on the Accord EX-L V-6 Coupe.

The all-new 2013 should be a lot better.

Honda July 2012 Results

This just shows how large an effect the earthquake and tidal wave it produced had on the Japanese auto industry.

I see that CR-Z sales are strongly down. What's the story there?

Well, besides the fact that car sales are down anyway, I simply think that few people are interested in it. It's a 2-seater in the same price range as an Insight and Prius c and it's rated at much lower fuel economy as both of them.

Re: Honda July 2012 Sales up 45.3%

Hi Jay:

I think it may be the Hyundai Veloster and Scion FR-S grabbing the younger sets attention now? With the base Veloster’s DI 1.6L (138 HP) and a stick/auto, it is only 2 and 4 mpg off the CR-Z with the same while costing quite a few thousand less. Bring in the all-new 13 Turbo loaded and you have a 200 HP hot youth machine vs. the 122 HP 1.5L in the CR-Z. Both cost about the same (CR-Z in EX form) with the Veloster Turbo having a lot more “STUFF”.

Looking at the much more thirsty (22/30 mpgUS) FR-S, the 200 HP RWD powertrain may be attracting that crowd as well? I still love to see the CR-Z’s out on the road but if it were my $’s today, a Veloster would take the CR-Z’s place.

I am not a Velsoter or CR-Z kind of guy but both are go-cart like fun to drive. It is just that the over 40 crowd (I belong) do not want to drive a fun to drive go-cart back and forth to work every day.

Just another opinion anyway?

Wayne

Re: Honda July 2012 Sales up 45.3%

I don't understand the CR-Z really. Not fast enough to be a boy-racer, not efficient enough to be a eco-fun car. 2-seats is not that broadly appealing anyway. Who is the target market?

It is just a good driving and well built fun car and fuel efficient as well. What is a 911? H
