Chris Woodyard - USATODAY - July 25, 2012
People aren't going to buy cars every two or three years anymore, an automotive website says based on an unscientific poll it conducted online.
Now, 78% of the more than 4,000 people polled by AutoMD.com says they will keep their cars at least 10 years.
"What is most compelling is that longer ownership has become an embedded habit for car owners, regardless of what the economy does," said Brian Hafer, a vice president at AutoMD.com. "This significant lengthening of the ownership cycle looks like it is here to stay."... [Read More]

If it ain't broke, don't replace it.
That said, I am going to get a plug-in as soon as I can. . . . and drive it for 15 years.

You know what really lifts my spirits, and costs a lot less than a car? New socks. Seriously. I feel like I stepped out of ZZ Top's Sharp Dressed Man when I'm wearing new socks.

Re: Most people waiting up to 10 years to buy a new car
People that trade cars every 3 years (salesmen with a territory?) will lease.. the rest of us drive it into the ground if the car will still do the job, the exception is what to do with the Miata once you have done your duty and produced 3 kids.

Simple.
Race it on the weekends or pull out the air breathing gas engine and convert it to electric. Or just do both.

Buying a car every 10 years instead of every 3 would save a considerable amount of resources. Plus its way cheaper - and cars last that long easily.

I already do this, and have done this since I started driving... so it appears I was ahead of the curve .

Re: Most people waiting up to 10 years to buy a new car
The shortest I ever owned a vehicle was 5 years, but it was 20 years old when I bought it. Sold it for more money than I paid for it after I put almost 100,000 miles on it. My 81 Buick and my 86 Chevy were both 10 years old when I bought them, and I still own them both.

Re: Most people waiting up to 10 years to buy a new car
Well, we bumped a 2000 Sable with the 2010 Prius.
The 2008 Civic was a car needed when I moved here.
So, January 2018 and December 2019 would be our 10 years. I'm already setting money aside.
