Chrysler's EcoDiesel 3.0L trademark

The diesels are coming!

http://www.cleanmpg.com/photos/data/500/chryslers-ecodiesel-badge.jpg
Viknesh Vijayenthiran - MOTORAUTHORITY - July 6, 2012

VM Motori is jointly owned by GM and Fiat --Ed.

It reads “EcoDiesel 3.0” and was registered by Chrysler with the U.S. Patents and Trademarks office late last month. The 3.0 figure in the badge denotes the displacement of the diesel engine Chrysler plans to install in several models in its lineup.

Built by Italian firm VM Motori and developed together with Fiat, Chrysler’s new diesel will be a 3.0-liter V-6 turbodiesel producing a peak output of 241 horsepower and 406 pound-feet of torque. A version of this particular engine is already offered on several Chrysler models overseas, including the Jeep Grand Cherokee and 300, the latter of which is sold overseas with a Lancia badge.

Matched to a five-speed automatic, this engine is expected to return a mileage rating of around 23 mpg city and 33 mpg highway in the Jeep Grand Cherokee.... [Read More]

This would be a great engine option for the Jeep Wrangler as well.

Jeebus. That's more than 2 1/2 times the output of our TDI, which moves my family around just fine. When will smaller, non-luxury cars (other than VWs, and the promised Cruze, and some promised, as-yet unannounced Mazda) finally get a diesel option in this country?

I think it would be nice on a 1500, and lighten it up a bit please.

Re: Chrysler's EcoDiesel 3.0L trademark

Sorry for the grousing ... yes, of course it would be nice to see on any number of gas guzzlers, and a big-ass cut in fuel consumption on a Jeep Cherokee or a (finally!) light-duty pickup would save more fuel, even when driven by a leadfoot, than the efforts of those of us hypermiling around in small cars.

But still ... anytime I see the FE gap between behemoths and smaller cars narrowing, it makes me nervous and makes it harder to sell the argument that Americans just drive too freakin' big of cars.

Re: Chrysler's EcoDiesel 3.0L trademark

Did a quick scan of http://carfueldata.direct.gov.uk/ for the Chrysler 3.0 diesel.

Based on 34 to 39.8 mpg(Imp) combined observed (all ATs), I suspect the US experience will fall in the 28 to 34 mpg(US) range.

The 3.0 Liter VM diesel is NOT, in my opinion, a fuel fuel engine. I consider it in the performance class.

Of course I could be wrong, but I doubt it.

Probably <38% of current EU diesels have fuel economies this low.

EDIT: Might be good for truck applications.

Re: Chrysler's EcoDiesel 3.0L trademark

Wow
Dodge 1/2 Rams could leapfrog GMs best the 5.3 (ignoring the 2 mode hybrids since they are crazy expensive) and Fords 3.5 dual turbo spark motor.

400 lb lbs with a 8 speed AT-plenty for 1/2 tons-and GM sold plenty of 3/4 ton vehicles with the 5.7 spark motor that didn't make 400 lb ft-and made about 250hp.

Why is GMs two mode so pricy-$8000 premium?? It beats everything in city by so much that it wins combined MPG crown-
Toyota charges maybe $3000 premium-why soooo much more??

Well-great for Dodge- apparently the Italians are actually going to help Chrysler
MB- with all its high tech claims-didn't do jack for Chrysler-produced worst in class FE in most segments(except Sprinter which was awfully expensive)
Charlie
PS-GM had better step up-they still make most of their profits from trucks-Ford and now Dodge are set to pass them!

Charlie, MB did not have a fuel frugal engine even in their product before 2008. Their first, in my opinion, was their 2.143 Liter diesel.

The the VM engine will not be cheap due to its' complexity and relatively low volume ... maybe USD $3.2k to $4.5k US emissions compliant ... best guess.

Re: Chrysler's EcoDiesel 3.0L trademark

Ten years ago I owned/drove a GMC truck with the 350 (5.7) V8. It was rated 210 hp / 300 lb-ft. In a truck weighing 4500 lb. No, it wasn't fast, but it would certainly get me there.

This little thingy has way more output and should beat my trucks 12/17 mpg handily.
