Slightly, yes. About a percent better. Hard to notice with the day to day variations, though.

Only a very small increase in mpg if you stop filling up over-frequently; bigger decrease in wasted time.

Around my area riving in the far right line and hugging the right line still doesn't get the point across to people in letting them know to pass me. Would tuning on my hazards on in my Honda be worth it? I tend to go 45-50 mph in a 55-60mph zone depending on traffic conditions and like usual people are normally going 65-70mph.

The reason I ask is because I came across a Toyota Prius going a steady 48mph and was using hazards and people seemed to get the picture. The only thing I worry about is attracting the attention of police officers thinking I may be in the need of assistance.

What are all your thought?

Also I thought I would throw up a picture of my car just for the hell of it. Have yet to start making payments but I'm still happy with it. =)

OK, well according to Indiana law, you're not a special vehicle so you can only use hazard lights:

So the danger of driving with flashing hazards is that you're indicating that you are a vehicular traffic hazard and police are liable to stop you either to check you're OK or to ticket you for unnecessarily being a vehicular traffic hazard.

For hypermiling I'd stick to using the hazard lights only when drivers behind you clearly aren't paying attention.

This is interesting...the car I had (for 287k miles) before the HCH2 was a 5sp-mt SVT Contour that I have a haunting suspicion was good for high numbers with advanced techniques. I'd love it have it back for a month to work out P&G routines, FAS and all the rest...the 2.5 liter six produced 200 horses with high compression, extruded intakes and a light weight flywheel. With a honda like short 5th gear, it returned 29-30 on reasonably driven highway trips...20-25 when my foot was made of lead. I bet the P would of been quick and efficient and the G is the G.

If the Civic SI has the SAHM modes and other fuel sipping characteristics of other Honda engines at low RPM, I bet you can crush the EPA if you add in Pulse and Glide when possible.

How would you recommend I use pulse and glide in my day to day driving and what conditions would be the most ideal to use it ?

Also it seems like this technique is best used in hybrids which my car is not and during the glide should I just put it in neutral and coast? Is shutting off the engine required ?

P&G can be done in non-hybrids and also without turning off the engine. I used P&G in pretty much all conditions with my (now sold) Elantra and it gave as high as 77mpg commuting trips through city traffic -- that was with engine off coasting but with idle coasting in neutral on the highway I was able to exceed 700mi on a tank and keep the average over 50mpg while doing it. Not long before selling the car I did manage to get it up over 60mpg on the highway (average speed of 57mph) using engine off gliding and precisely modulated pulses (that car was very sensitive to engine load when it came to pulse efficiency).

This was in an '02 Elantra sedan 5sp with a rather inefficient 2.0l 4 cylinder iron block. Andrew (Palemelanesian) pops out 100+mpg trips in his '96 Civic 5spd with similar gearing to my Elantra, but his car is lighter, only 1.6l, and of course has the traditional Honda magic in its powertrain.

I P&G my Insight MT but then again, I don't really treat it as a hybrid because the efficiency cycle of using battery assist followed by charging it back up is less efficient than not using the electric side at all. That car is a bit more complex in that it uses lean burn and can return ridiculous numbers in steady state cruising so I use a carefully modulated mix of techniques to get the best out of that vehicle.

I use the hazard blinkers strategically when needed, usually 3-5 blinks and then off again. Timing your pulses and glides to work with traffic instead of against it eliminates a good portion of the problem. As a cluster of cars approaches from behind, pulse up to near their speed. They can pass you with minimal fuss and as they clear you you can take a nice long glide in the empty space behind.

i recently bought a 2008 civic si. glad to see a fellow si owner on here!

i actually got my si because i got a good deal on it and on my trade (2008 tacoma double cab). i am glad i got the si instead of a regular civic. i can try to maximize MPG when i want, but can also have some fun in it also.

i have been on vacation the last week, so haven't been doing my work route in it much. but starting tomorrow i'll be driving it to work everyday, and will see what kind of MPG i can really get. i have a scangauge 2, and i try to do P&G with engine on. on the glide, i do not put in neutral. if i understand correctly, if you put in neutral you will be getting around 100-150 mpg on the glide, but it depends on vehicle speed. if you are in gear, you will see 9999 MPG on the scangauge because the fuel injectors are closed and the car is using zero gas (i think that's right).

anyways, good luck in going for over 40 mpg. maybe i'll try to get there also!

If you get fuel cut off (9999 mpg on your SG) you will experience engine braking that will severely limit your glide distance. You should get better FE gliding in N, and MUCH better FE gliding with the engine off.
