First Full Month - Focus’ 1.0L EcoBoost Uptake is Almost 25% In Europe

The perfect replacement for the US based Fiesta's current 1.6L... Someday.

Europe’s 2012 Focus – 1.0L EcoBoost equipped.

The new Ford Focus 1.0L EcoBoost is off to a fast start in its first full month of sales across Europe. According to Ford, this past April saw more than 4,700 European customers ordering a 2012 Focus quipped with 1.0L EcoBoost, accounting for an eye opening 23.3 percent of all Ford Focus’ ordered across the EU’s 19 principal markets.

The 1.0L EcoBoost

The 213 pound direct-injected and turbocharged 1.0L EcoBoost engine was developed at Ford’s Dunton Technical Centre in the U.K.. The fast response of the turbocharger is said to offer virtually no turbo lag and peak torque of 170 lb-ft. from 1,300-4,500 rpm while the little engine that could provides a peak output of 118 HP.

The all-new EcoBoost engine also features an exhaust manifold cast into the cylinder head, which lowers the temperature of the exhaust gases and in turn enables the engine to run with the optimum fuel-to-air ratio across a much wider band than the naturally aspirated 1.6L it is replacing.

An advanced “split cooling” system reduces fuel consumption by warming the engine more quickly and – unique to the 1.0 engine –cast iron has been selected for the block, reducing the amount of energy needed for warm-up by up to 50 percent compared with aluminum.

Intelligent ancillaries such as a variable air-conditioning compressor and oil pump also reduce demand on the engine – improving economy and emissions – while special coatings for engine components and intricate development of engine geometry result in minimal frictional losses.

Like its larger-capacity siblings, the 1.0L EcoBoost engine will use twin independent variable camshaft timing (Ti-VCT) to further improve performance and economy. Ford has also employed an all-new camshaft actuator to speed up response times without sacrificing durability.

The 1.0L EcoBoost engine is the smallest and highest power density gasoline engine Ford has ever built ever for the consumer.

EU Focus 1.0L EcoBoost Engine Purchasing Uptake

Switzerland - 60%
Greece - 37%
Dutch - 35%
UK - 28%
Germany - 28%
Spain - 18%
French - 17%
Italy - 16%

In addition to the European Focus, the engine also will be available in the Ford B-MAX and Ford C-MAX (Europe only so far) later this year.

Want a perfect replacement for the current 1.6L in the US based Fiesta? Ford has the technology and drivability would be improved too. Whether Ford will bring it over however remains to be seen?

I'm really impressed with the HP and Torque spec's on that engine.
