Is this a car or a lawnmower?.. I'm referring to the gas in the tank picking up moisture from the air. My brother keeps E10 in his generator for months and I dont think its a good idea with a vented gas cap.

The same car referenced in the heading of my posts. Cars haven't had vented caps since the 60s.

The 81 Mazda may have issues with gaskets.. gasohol was around back then so I doubt it... 15% may lean out the engine too much. You can always get a carb rebuild kit... then you have corrosion issues with all the moisture to deal with.

Re: ethanol free fuel - who uses it

My 81 Buick's manual says not to use ethanol blends exceeding 10%. Add to that a 30+ year old fuel system, and I think anything more than E10 would eat it up.

My 70 Challenger is open, the cap seals but there is just a overflow tube at the top of the filler neck, an open system. I think in 1971 it went to a closed system, maybe 1972.

That may be correct; I oversimplified because I wasn't sure of the exact year vented caps and equivalent open venting like your Challenger's were banned by tightening limits on evaporative emissions. It was around that time. I think my parents' '71 Dodge Coronet had some sort of closed system, but can't recall whether it used a carbon canister. My '72 Subaru had no canister, and got by with venting the fuel tank through a long tube into the air cleaner housing. My '81 Mazda has the canister, as did all cars by then.

Re: ethanol free fuel - who uses it

I'm currently using StaBil Marine, which lists ethanol as one of its targets. A little lasts a long time so the cost is minimal.

Re: ethanol free fuel - who uses it

I tried ethanol free gas in my '88 Escort for a few tanks last year and didn't see any increase in day to day driving gas mileage. I use Stabil in my motorcycle for long term winter storage.

Go to pure-gas.org for addresses & a great zoomable map for ethanol free gas stations in your area. There is one station in Longview, TX on the NW perimeter of your city selling 87 octane ethanol-free gasoline at Texas Auto Care, 1100 Pinetree Road, Longview, TX. I'm pretty sure your mpg loss is greater than 3%, as thousands of drivers will attest. With careful records of years of use of 10% ethanol, I found 100% gasoline & switched our 3 cars to it. Our 3 cars' mpg increased 8%, 7-8%, & 6%. As others have stated here, our 3 car engines were smoother, quieter, more often ascended hills without shifting down & responded quicker to pedal adjustments.
