Canada's 2011 Auto Sales -- We Loved our Trucks and Compact Cars
The Civic remained Canada's best selling car
Mike Sefton - CleanMPG - Feb 4, 2012
Much like in the United States, the Ford F-series was Canada's best selling vehicle in 2011, beating out the GM full size truck twins by more than 9,000 units. Third on the list was the Dodge Ram, followed by Canada's perennial best selling car, the Canadian-built Honda Civic. The Hyundai Elantra posted big gains in 2011, up by 30% to become Canada's second best selling car. Right on its heels was the Ford Escape, the top selling SUV on the list. The top selling midsize car was the Ford Fusion, at 20th place overall on the list.
Big winners in 2011 included the Elantra with a 30% increase in sales, the Dodge Journey, which was up 22%, and the VW Jetta which increased its sales by 81% over last year. Hyundai's gain seems to have been Mazda's loss, with 3 sales down 22%.
Canada's top selling vehicles in 2011:

1 | Ford F-Series | 96,325 | 97,913 | -1.6% | |

Re: Canada's 2011 Auto Sales -- We Loved our Trucks and Compact Cars
A few things caught my eye when working on this list. Notably, Fusion and Sonata outsold Camry and Accord, neither of which even made the list. The Ranger is still selling well. The VW Golf isn't on the list but sold 13,919 units in 2011. In the US they sold 17,839. I was telling some co-drivers during our F-150 EcoBoost challenge that I seemed to see a lot more new Golfs back home than down in the southern states. I didn't realize the discrepancy was that large though.

Wow.. Ranger outselling the Tacoma, which isn't even on the list.

Re: Canada's 2011 Auto Sales -- We Loved our Trucks and Compact Cars
Hi Mike:
Fantastic story!
I knew RAM was outselling the GMC Sierra and the Sierra was soundly outselling the Chevrolet Silverado. RAM sales are increasing quickly here in the US but the Sierra does not hold a candle to Silverado sales. Probably because there are so few GMC dealerships by comparison to Chevrolet?
I was also amazed by the number of Chrysler Minivans sold, #4 on the list. They barely even break the middle ranks down here every month.
Although the Mazda3 fell on hard times (I hope SKYATIV turns that around in Canada), to see that model only behind the Civic AND Elantra says Canadian's appear to be better shoppers than US consumers. I also was surprised to see the Cruze so low on the list. It is a darn good car for a decent price.
And then there is the Ranger. I hope Ford did not shoot themselves in the foot when they retired it in North America. The all-new global redesign is winning accolades everywhere but here and it seems to be a good alternative to the oversized F-150 for many smaller contractors and weekend drivers looking for a little better fuel economy and a lower upfront cost. And better than the Tacoma on paper too.
Wayne
