I'd like to see what the EPA splits are that give them the 50mpg. We know the higher speed glide capability and improved regen could help on some of the tests.

This is a bit on the small side for hatchbacks (Fiesta=27", Fit=28", Rio=28", Accent=30", Golf=30", Impreza=32", Focus=33", Insight=33", Mazda3=33.5") but not tiny: the Sonic and SX4 hatches, for instance, appear considerably smaller, as are the Soul and the Mini Countryman (both 24").

WriConsult,
Thanks for listing your numerous hatchback cargo length measurements. You've provided a useful public service that manufacturers and the EPA neglect.
About a decade ago, I started a somewhat similar project, but on a smaller number of models---my old GLC and two then-recent potential replacement hatchbacks. I measured not only floor length to the rear seat as you did, but also several other critical dimensions. Those included length to the back of the front seat (with rear seatback folded), width between wheelhousings, width behind the wheelhousings, height from floor to security cover, height from floor to hatch, clearance space between folded-down rear seatback and the back side of the front seatback, etc.
Floor lengths for those now-old hatchbacks corresponding to your new data:
1981 Mazda GLC: 31.5"
1997 Honda Civic: 29.2"
2001 Hyundai Accent: 30.5"
Measured to the rear of the front seat, they were even closer together. Unfortunately, the Civic had to be ruled out for bike-hauling duty because of inadequate width between wheelhousings, and the Accent because of inadequate clearance between front seat and folded rear seatback. Your numbers look as though the Prius C, Fiesta, and Sonic might fail because of inadequate length.
I consolidated your new data and my old data into one spreadsheet. If it were still possible without pushy salesmen looking over my shoulder making me nervous, I'd like to make more measurements on the current models you listed, so I could fill in all the blank cells in this spreadsheet, and share that data!

Re: Toyota’s Prius c And another PHEV in Detroit
The Japanese orders pile up:
http://www.thetruthaboutcars.com/201...-feat-prius-c/
Japanese pre-orders are at 120,000. That's 10 months of their expected monthly demand. Maximum production at the plant (which makes other cars) is 30,000.
Kei cars sell like hot cakes (assuming Japanese like hot cakes) so why wouldn't a smaller, cheaper, more efficient (for Japan) car sell better than the Prius?

Yes, the Japanese do like hot cakes ... they pronounce it "pahn-keki".
