Alternate Route(s) and the Roundabout

Hi All:

While I always promote alternate routes for a given vehicle, conditions or time of day, it is always useful to keep your ears and eyes wide open for changes to local roadways that used to be a disaster in the making for anyone considering a high FE route.

All summer long, the main thoroughfare from my home towards the Stateline to the North has been closed off. I knew they were adding a roundabout at one of the stop signs but did not realize they were adding two at both wicked bad stop signs. It is a downhill towards the south and uphill towards the north. Both were bad propositions for good fuel economy so I usually avoided that roadway altogether. With the two new roundabouts installed and now open, I only have two stop signs and a light from my home all the way to the WI border some 7-miles away.

You should see traffic moving around these two roundabouts. It never stops and it is a thing of beauty as the locals get used to what a roundabout is and what it can be used for. Unfortunately it is a single lane roundabout but that is better than no lanes and a stop sign at these two intersections that would choke at rush hour with Ό mile backups …

Wadsworth, IL Roundabouts open for business

Just one of the two, one right after the other about ½ mile apart.

Wayne

Re: Alternate Route(s) and the Roundabout

Roundabouts are very popular here in Europe I see that in US soon will be also
I agree with Wayne that they are in most cases MUCH better than stop sign or even traffic lights.
Definitely a way to go!
