Java barchat causing browser crash

For about a week now the Java applet barchart in the left side of the header has been causing my browser to crash at random. When these crashes occur the applet shows as breaking off in its own window and remains visible on the screen for about 1 second after the main browser window has closed. It seems to happen more frequently if I have other tabs open and in use but definitely occurs with just one tab open to this site.

OS: Ubuntu Linux 6.10
Browser: Firefox 2.0.0.1/2.0.0.2
JRE: 1.5.7-r2/1.6.0-b105
DM: Gnome 2.16.1/KDE 4.3.5.5

If I use AdBlock+ to stop the applet from loading the crashes stop occurring.

(Regular lurker, occasional poster de-cloaking...)

I've had some trouble with the Java barchart too.

Also, it slows down load/page processing times noticeably when hitting the site (compared to the previous iteration without it), so has become a minor irritation.

Re: Java barchat causing browser crash

I will move the barchart off out of the header later today. I will move it to the research page.

Re: Java barchat causing browser crash

No crashing here (with Firefox), but CleanMPG pages used to be painstakingly slow to load on my home dialup connection. Of course the intrinsic dialup speed was part of the problem, but pages here were noticeably slower than those of other forums. I fixed it by changing the page layout using the drop-down on the bottom left of the CleanMPG page to Default Style, vs. Greenleaf. (Which actually seems to be the default. Tbaleno, why the confusing terminology, or am I missing something?) Among other changes with that, the Barchart goes away.

Re: Java barchat causing browser crash

Default style means the default vbulliten style not the default to use for the users.

Also, I realy appreciate bailout bringing this issue up. Thanks for your contribution to making this site better for everyone.
