FEH not going into EV

The last few days I've really been able to use the SoC gauge to keep the mpg up on my 05' FEH. Today, for some reason, my vehicle would not go into EV mode. Usually, at the end of a 3 mile or so stretch I would just coast in drive and the vehicle would go into EV mode somewhere between 25-40 mph. I would just coast the rest of the way to the stop and greatly increasing my MPG. I could usually do that 3-4 times on my 9 mile commute.

Today on the way home from work I noticed it would never go into EV. The SoC was fine (53 to 54) but it never would shut the ICE off during the coast. I went back into town this evening and tried it again, and no luck on the 9 miles in or 9 miles back.

Any suggestions? Any way to force it into EV mode? Any switch that could be installed?

Thanks again!

John

If there is nothing wrong with the FEH, the only thing that would prevent EV in your case would be the battery temperature. If the Tav xgauge is 95F or above, the engine won't shut off. A malfunctioning blend door could also cause this, as well as a bad MECS pump. Also possible is that the air filter for the battery is dirty. If you start off with a Tav of 95F or greater, you won't get EV untill you drop below 90F. However, if you start off with a Tav less than 95 then EV is possible up untill 95 is reached.

Pull up the Tav xgauge and see what you have.

Re: FEH not going into EV

Good morning,

This morning everything was back to normal. Yesterday the outside temp was about 105 and my Escape sits outside while I'm at work. I also noticed that while I was at a friends house it sounded like a fan motor was blowing while the Escape was parked. I researched this some last night after my post.....I know I should do that before my post..=)....and I think heat was the issue. I never run the AC on max. I rarely run the AC at all. Today is supposed to be another hot day, so I'll pull up the Tav gauge and see what it is reading on my way home.

Thanks again! This is a great forum. Still loving my FEH. I averaged 28 mpg on the 1517 mile trip home after purchasing the FEH. The last 600 miles really hurt my average because I was going 78. But, I've put about 900 miles on it since getting home and I'm averaging right at 34 mpg for the last 900 miles. If I really really really try I can get 40+ mpg, but if I just do simple things I seem to get around 36 mpg. Really loving this SUV. Of course, my wife's Prius is doing much better, but it's nice to have an SUV that gets decent mpg!
