Hyundai’s June Sales up 15.6% - 11 Elantra is Smokin Hot!
Slowing gains but the increase on a month over month basis thanks to the Sonata and Elantra is astounding none-the-less.
Wayne Gerdes - CleanMPG - July 1, 2011
The just released 2012 Hyundai Accent should being having an impact on total Accent sales by next month. With a 138 HP capable ICE, < $14K starting price and a 30/40 city/highway mpgUS per the EPA, is it any wonder?
Hyundai announced its June 2011 sales of 59,209, a 15.6 percent increase compared with the same period a year ago. This represents an all-time sales record for both the month of June and the first half of the year for Hyundai, breaking the marks set last year. This also marks the sixth consecutive month that Hyundai has set an all-time monthly sales record.
For the first six months of the year, total sales are up 26 percent, with retail volume rising 38 percent. Sales to fleet accounts represent 13 percent of the total sales year-to-date and 12 percent for the month of June. Forty percent of Hyundai vehicles sold in June achieved 40 MPG fuel economy ratings, an all-time record for the brand.
Dave Zuchowski, Hyundai America's Executive VP of National Sales:
Quote:
|
"With the recent launch of our all-new Accent, Hyundai now has the freshest and most fuel-efficient sedan lineup in the industry with Sonata Hybrid and Elantra sedan rounding out our current trio of 40 MPG vehicles, with the 40 MPG Veloster right around the corner. We are confident going into the third quarter that the company is on track for its best year ever."

John Krafcik, Hyundai Motor America's president and CEO:
Quote:
|
"The best way to reduce America's fuel consumption is to put more fuel-efficient vehicles in American driveways, right now. The best way to do that is to mass produce the most efficient technologies, like direct-injected engines and 6-speed transmissions, and deploy them as standard equipment, not expensive options. That's why we're leading the industry in fuel efficiency and 40 MPG vehicle sales, and it's certainly a big driver of our overall sales growth this year."

Re: Hyundai’s June Sales up 15.6% - 11 Elantra is Smokin Hot!
Very impressive, and not unexpected. Give people a car that's well made, fuel efficient, and affordable, finance it at an attractive rate so the payments aren't ridiculous, and then just keep the factories running 24/7.
It's interesting to see the Sonata sales up 0.8% over last year, when dealers were selling the cars right off the transporter. There must be more to the Sonata success story than the styling, since styling only sells for as long as it's considered "new". Could it be the value for the dollar, the best in class fuel economy, or high level of standard equipment?
And for 2012, the Sonata 6AT improves to EPA 24/35, matching that of the 6MT model. For the great majority of Sonata buyers who go with the automatic, this is a free 10% improvement in fuel economy.

Re: Hyundai’s June Sales up 15.6% - 11 Elantra is Smokin Hot!
Hyundai's stunning lineup, combined with great pricing, an improved reputation, high gas prices and the earthquake+tsunami in Japan, have created the perfect storm for their success.
Where they need to be careful is their (apparently) increasing prices. One of Hyundai's strengths has been the incredible value (and my own Touring absolutely blew away anything else I could have gotten for $15.5k). Of course this is part of the normal curve for an up-and-comer, but they do need to make sure not to raise prices too fast, or they're going to have to offer HUGE incentives to keep product moving if gas prices crash again.

Re: Hyundai’s June Sales up 15.6% - 11 Elantra is Smokin Hot!
My guess on the slow increase in sticker price is the increased cost of raw materials - steel, plastic (petroleum), electronics, etc. A weaker dollar means a given quantity of the material costs more. Also, new models are gaining new features and technologies, which increase the cost to build the car but also adds value - perceived or real.
I ended up with the Elantra because the Cruze with the same level of equipment was 2000-3000 more, and unavailable. Although lower transaction prices are always welcome, Hyundai has a long way to go before hitting the sticker prices of some of its competitors.

They can assemble 300,000 cars in the USA each year. Hyundai are also going to expand engine production to 300,000 with a rumor that they'll build another plant.
They even had to "borrow" Kia capacity in GA to allow them to built enough Elantras. (Kia are expanding their GA plant to add a 3rd shift and assemble 360,000 cars per year since their sales are growing too. 146.5k sales YTD and that's just cars.)
