I like the gearing at highway speeds, very similar to my car. Quite surprised about the alloy wheel with the spare tire, that could have been an easy way for VW to save a few dollars per car there. Don't think many people consider the spare tire and wheel as a deal breaker when making a car purchase, so long as there is one there.

I dont care that its a large good looking sedan gas miser, that timing belt is a deal breaker for me

Yeah it is a bit of a head scratcher why they still use timing belts for the TDI. I believe the interval is ~130k miles now though so it's not as bad as it used to be. Think it's closer to ~100k miles in Canada, probably due to the climate.

Not only that but they could probably free up some cargo space by using a smaller spare also.

btw...what is VW's obsession with leatherette? I'll take mine with cloth seats, thanks.

Nice to see the MT is available. That wasn't the case in the last Passat TDI iteration (2003-04?), nor is it the case with the current Passat gas wagon.

Speaking of wagons ... is there going to be one?

Also amazing to see that the FE actually slightly beats the Jetta/Golf TDI if I'm not mistaken. Awesome gearing! This is the size of car that's appropriate to VW's powerful 2.0TD engine anyway. Too bad we can't get the 1.6 in the Golf and Jetta.

I'm with nighthawk on the seats. Give me cloth any day. But I wouldn't let a timing belt be a deal-breaker ... do it on schedule and it's not a big deal. As for the spare, VW has made a BIG DEAL of offering full-sized spares in the past, and I'm sure it still matters to a lot of their buyers.

Ever since the Mk4 Jetta and Golf back around 2000, I think most, if not all, of the VWs have had a "real" spare tire. The one in my car is a 195/65R/15, not quite full size but definitely not a donut. Agreed on the lack of cloth seats, though it would not surprise me a huge amount if our Canadian TDI had them as standard

I believe the fuel economy gain is due in part to cutting the amount of EGR the engine uses and using urea instead for exhaust aftereatment. Will have to wait for Wayne to get some seat time to see if it's a significant improvement or just them getting better at the EPA test.
