Prius v still set for Early Fall US Consumer Delivery

Today is Japan’s Prius v (the α over there) launch followed almost immediately by a delay announcement

http://www.cleanmpg.com/photos/data/501/2012_Prius_v_in_the_twisties.jpg
Wayne Gerdes - CleanMPG - April 13, 2011

The Prius v: “Versatility” for Young, Active Families - 40 + mpgUS combined and $29,069 USD to start in Japan as the "α".

The Prius α was derived from the third-generation "Prius" and offers the same outstanding fuel efficiency and environmental performance and a new more comfortable interior that provides a first for the upcoming Prius family, multiple seating arrangements.

In Japan, the Prius α is available in two interior configurations: a five-seat, two-row model and a seven-seat, three-row model, the latter's third row allowed by a space-saving Li-Ion battery in the center console, a first for a Toyota-brand mass-produced hybrid vehicle. The Toyota Hybrid System II (THS II) in combination with outstanding aerodynamic form and low weight give the Prius α fuel efficiency of 72.9 mpgUS on the Japan test cycles. In the US, the Prius v will arrive with a 42/38/40 mpg city/highway/combined rating per the EPA.

Toyota aims to expand its range of hybrid vehicles around the world with more Prius derivatives including the five-seat Prius α-based "Prius v" planned for launch here in North America later this summer and the seven-seat Prius α-based "Prius +" planned for launch in Europe in mid-2012.

Prius α Retail Pricing in Japan

ModelTrimSeatingPrice ($USD)
SL5$29,069
SBase5$30,925
STouring5$34, 636

GBase5$34,636
GBase7$37,110
GTouring5$37,110
GTouring7$40,883

With the Prius α configuration and pricing details released in Japan, Toyota immediately announced that there will be an unavoidable delay in delivery of the "Prius α" due to the ongoing effects of the Great East Japan Earthquake on production.

Almost immediately following that pronouncement, Toyota North America released a statement that the Prius v is still on track for delivery to U.S. customers this fall.

North American Prius v Highlights

Inside, the Prius v emphasizes new spaciousness with flexibility for active families. With a high seating position, more than ample head room, and impressive 38-inch rear seat legroom, comfort with high fuel economy is guaranteed. A low, wide-opening rear hatch reveals a welcome 34.3 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seats, making it the most spacious hybrid on the market and even larger than some SUVs!

Sliding second row seats allow for easier ingress and egress and rear-storage flexibility, with a 45-degree recline for greater comfort. The 60/40 split, folding rear seats present four different seat arrangements that provide excellent usability for passengers and luggage, while a fold-flat front-passenger seat allows for extremely long cargo.

Also available, and a Toyota-first, is a resin Panoramic View moonroof with power retractable sun shades that provides an open atmosphere in the cabin with a 40-percent reduction in weight as compared to conventional glass roofs of the same size, and excellent heat insulation performance.

Up front, the instrument-panel controls include a single-dial A/C control and a center-mounted digital combination meter. The driving controls include a Push Button Start, parking switch, electronic shift lever, and driving mode selection.

The Prius v is a showcase of technology that will include many of the same standard features. Four driving modes (Normal, Power, Eco and EV), a Smart Key System with Push Button Start, an electronic shift lever, Hill Start Assist Control (HAC), and a back-up camera are standard. Available options include energy-efficient LED headlamps, Dynamic Radar Cruise Control with a Pre-Collision System (PCS), and Advanced Parking Guidance System.

For a high level of safety, there are seven airbags, a high-strength cabin and an energy-absorbing body structure with impact beams, cross members and leg absorption pads. New driver and front-passenger seat design helps lessen possible whiplash injury during a collision.

Like all Toyota models, the Prius v will feature Toyota’s Star Safety System standard, which includes Vehicle Stability Control (VSC), Traction Control (TRAC), Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist. The v also features the standard Smart Stop Technology brake-override system.

We will have a lot more on the v after next week’s short lead in Half Moon Bay, CA.

So this just has more seating? The combined MPG is lowered from 50 to 40 for this setup...

IIRC it's about a foot longer overall than a standard G3 Prius, which is useful for extra seating but a huge deal for families needing to haul around kids, pets, and a bunch of stuff. Those folks usually end up with a mid-size SUV or a big wagon. Many of them could migrate over to the Prius V and double or triple their FE. I would rather see better mileage, myself, but even at 40mpg it's going to be the most efficient thing on the market in that capacity class.

Or a van. Easy access for installing child seats plus more cargo space could make a big difference.

40mpg is 1.5gal/100mi better than 25mpg. That saves $720/yr at $4/gal for 12,000 miles or $1200/yr over 20mpg. Numbers like those are pretty persuasive.

I know Americans aren't known for choosing efficiency over utility, but they do choose efficiency after utility and this could suck some sales from others wagons, vans and crossovers. The Prius v could particularly dent sales of the Sportwagen.

Re: Prius v still set for Early Fall US Consumer Delivery

*I* am the target market for this car (except for the price). Finally! I would like the existing Prius and I do appreciate its hatchback utility, but it's pretty dang tight for us if we bring the dog and our camping/hiking/biking/ and/or skiing gear along. The V's passenger space will be only marginally larger than the regular Prius, but its cargo space expands to 34 cubic feet (as opposed to the current Prius, which is officially 22cf but actually 18cf above the load floor).

So in terms of space it will be able to take on the ubiquitous small SUVs (now being relabeled as "compact crossovers" - blech!) which sell in huge numbers because they're the right size for millions of folks, and which are close to becoming the only choice available.

A few years from now, once these trickle down into the used market, and at a low point in the gas-price cycle when Americans' fruitfly memories get lulled into thinking that somehow signals a return to "normal", I will have to snap one of these up.

Meanwhile, although our family is the perfect candidate, we can't remotely afford it. We don't know that the price will actually be USD$29k -- car pricing usually doesn't translate directly from one country to another on an exchange-rate basis -- but it will surely be above $26-27k and nearly twice what we paid for our Elantra Touring. Which, thanks to this development, will hopefully be our last car purchase that isn't a hybrid or a diesel.

Re: Prius v still set for Early Fall US Consumer Delivery

It appears to be a less sculptured and more utilitarian version of the now available Lexus CT200H. Along with the latest in battery upgrades. Looks like it could be another choice for those in the market.

Have to wonder if the power train from the little mpg champ is up to the task of being a true overloaded "Hockey Mom" gear hauler. Hope to see some of our editors loading one up to the max for a mpg test drive/review.

Re: Prius v still set for Early Fall US Consumer Delivery

I had a chance to sit in the v when it was here in KC a few week ago. It is definately bigger inside than my GIII. The roof is quite a bit taller and stays high as it reaches the back of the car. The front seats felt like they were further from the ground vs our GIII. Makes it feel like a micro van. I liked it. More importantly, my wife liked it. She could see herself driving one. She loves our Prius, but likes to sit up high and have the cargo room our Pilot offers. The v is an option in her eyes.

A stripped version (lower cost, rugged upholstery and carpets) would do great as a taxi..

Re: Prius v still set for Early Fall US Consumer Delivery

Compared to our (now departed) Accord or Saturn SL2, our Prius GIII feels awfully high!
We may need the box on the roof for weekend camping trips, and multi-week camping trips will be really tight. I can definitely see the appeal of a Prius with more cargo space, even with the "only" 40 mpg.

Re: Prius v still set for Early Fall US Consumer Delivery

As I continue to research which car will replace my truck, I continue to keep coming back to this PRIUS V. Small and efficient enough that it would make a great commuter car, but big enough that if I needed to, I could squeeze 3 kids in the back seat. My wife will be driving the bigger car/suv of the two of us since she hauls around the kids more often (I'm trying to get her to take a look at the highlander hybrid). There is no reason why both of us need a big car/suv.
