300 Smart Fortwo BEVs Headed For the Streets of Amsterdam

Wayne Gerdes - CleanMPG - April 11, 2011

2011 Smart Fortwo BEV in Amsterdam - The second generation is equipped with a 16.5 kWh Li-Ion traction battery located between the axles beneath the floor and a 41 HP electric motor located in the rear.

When connected to a 220V outlet, the Fortwo BEV takes approximately three and a half hours to charge from 20 to 80 percent of its usable capacity and less than eight hours from 0 to 100% of its useable range. The battery may also be charged using a common household 110V outlet.

When fully charged, has a range of approximately 63-miles and a top speed of just over 60 mph.

The Sharing Plan

car2go and Smart announced today they are bringing their individual expertise to automobile mobility sharing with city cars powered only by electricity in Amsterdam before the end of the year. The program will start with up 300 Smart Fortwo BEVs.

The car2go program is said to already be a success in Ulm/Germany and Austin/Texas with a total of more than 35,000 members. In Hamburg, the car2go program was made available to the public with 300 vehicles last week. The all electric car2go program begins with the Smart Fortwo BEVs equipped with latest telematics technology allowing fully automated, easy and convenient rental operations. It allows customers to rent cars almost spontaneously without having to commit to a specific return time or location.

In addition, Amsterdam is going to install 300 electric charging stations by end of 2011 with a total of 1000 planned before by end of 2012.

Amsterdam already has an efficient public transit network as well as various bike and car sharing programs which are well accepted by its citizens.

Robert Henrich, CEO car2go:
Quote:
“car2go is aiming to complement the existing transport systems by providing a service for short and spontaneous one-way trips. We see ourselves not as a competition to other means of transport, but as another puzzle piece in the mix of Amsterdam’s different means of urban transportation.”
car2go is planning to establish a subsidiary in the Netherlands in order to bring the service to Amsterdam. Further details of the service including driving area, parking/charging concept and start of customer registrations will be decided over the coming months with a signed memorandum of understanding with the City of Amsterdam.
