Arrow Help and Suggestions

Hi everyone I just got into hypermiling and am looking for some pointers. I currently have a 2009 Toyota Rav4 its a V6. I ranged around 16 to just 19 miles per gallon before I did some adjustments.

The first adjustment was the person behind the wheel. I no longer jam my foot on the gas to hurry up and get to the red light or stop sign. I start off slow and gain momentum while attempting to time lights. I am also put the vehicle in neutral when I see a red light and coast into the light. I also do this when getting off ramps on the highway.

The second adjustment was increasing my tire pressure on my front tires to the sidewall max which is 44psi. The rear tires are now at 40psi. They previously were all at 32psi.

Third thing I did was add 3oz of MMO to the gas tank at my last fill up. I have used MMO on and off for many years. My father and grandfather swore by the stuff.

I also try not to go over 65. I try to keep it in the range of around 55.

I am happy to report my mileage is currently 27 to 28 MPG. This is combined highway and city driving.

I would like to try to get 35MPG. Is there anything else I can do? Maybe a better dry air filter as I don't like the "wet" ones. I have heard of people over oiling them and causing more harm to their engine.

I plan on switching to synthetic oil and maybe to 5W-20 instead of 5W-30.

Does anyone else have any ideas? Any thoughts of using one of those gadgets? One of the gauges. Different type of spark plug or wires? Covering the grill?

I also plan on doing this with an 2005 Toyota Camry 4 Cylinder I have. I would like to try to get 40MPG in it.

Any ideas or suggestions are appreciated.

Re: Help and Suggestions

Hi ShadowMedic, Welcome to CleanMPG. It sounds like you're off to a great start! 28MPG in a V6 Suv is awesome, for sure! For one, the Scangauge is your best friend and worth every penny. It will pay for itself in months, and you'll probably be over 30MPG in a tank or two. Stick to the OEM style dry paper filter, and synthetic 5W-20 if that weight is approved for your engine (check gas cap/owner's manual). DWL is gong to be your best friend . Check out the CleanMPG Primer if you haven't already, the link is in my signature below. Ask any questions you need, and we'll do our best to help you out.

Welcome to CleanMPG!

Great job! The Camry will be a breeze compared to what your doing with the RAV.

Use it if you want, but additives don't add anything to your mpg. They add $$$ to the manufacturers bank account normally. We don't advocate additives. They have a placebo effect.

According to the NTSB:

Re: Help and Suggestions

How accurate are these MPG gauges on Toyota's??? The thing said Average of 28MPG when I did the math with the mileage trip meter dived by the gallons of gas I just pumped I was closer to 25 MPG

Re: Help and Suggestions

Well if it's anything like my Prius it's off a lot.

Toyota says 58 mpg

Scan Gauge which was dead on with the amount of gas I needed to fill two days ago is showing 49.5 mpg.
