With NextGen Oil, Valvoline Hopes Drivers Heed the Green Call
New line of oils with 50% derived from recycled stock.
Paul Stenquist - NYTIMES BLOGS - March 16, 2011
There's a $7 or $10 mail-in rebate available until September 30, as well. Appears to be available in conventional and synthetic blend only... haven't seen any full-synthetic information for it. --Ed.
Valvoline announced on Monday that it would sell a recycled motor-oil product under the NextGen name.
The formulation is made from 50 percent re-refined base oil combined with virgin base oil. Valvoline, a division of Ashland Inc., says that the new product meets vehicle manufacturer specifications, performs just as well as its products made from 100 percent virgin base oil and carries the same engine guarantee.
While Valvoline claims to be the first national brand to market recycled oil, similar products are widely available. For example, Safety-Kleen EcoPower is made from 100-percent re-refined base oil and has been sold since 2008.
In response, Blair Boggs, vice president of global brands at Valvoline, wrote in an e-mail, “Valvoline is the first major national brand to be widely distributed, including to all major automotive retailers.”... [Read More]

That's cool! I'll consider that next month when both vehicles are due for a change. I like M1, but with 1/2 recycled, this is worth a wallet-vote. (especially a discounted one!)

Re: With NextGen Oil, Valvoline Hopes Drivers Heed the Green Call
From what I've been reading (haven't made trip to a store yet) on BITOG, it's priced the same as it's partner... Nextgen conventional is the same as white bottle conventional, and each Maxlife variant is the same... so the rebate definitely makes it worth a shot IMO, given the minimal FE hit offset.

Re: With NextGen Oil, Valvoline Hopes Drivers Heed the Green Call
Most manufacturers recommend 5W-30 or 0w-20 for newer cars. Didn't see the NextGen in those weights on their website. Green Earth makes G-Oil which is 5w-30 and API SM certified. It's biodegradable since it made from tallow(cow fat). LInk
Valvoline says it more efficient or renew used oil. Why haven't the oil industry done this decades ago? Was the technology not available back then?

Re: With NextGen Oil, Valvoline Hopes Drivers Heed the Green Call
Did some more searching, perhaps this would have been a better article to post...
Valvoline introduces NextGen recycled oil
Near the bottom is a picture of 5W-20 conventional (white bottle) and 5W-20 NextGen and is API SN. Don't believe the Maxlife NextGen is API certified, like many other high mileage oils.
That G-oil looks interesting as well...

Re: With NextGen Oil, Valvoline Hopes Drivers Heed the Green Call
I'm perplexed. For years, off-brand cheap oil has been sold that used recycled oil. To me, this just seems like they're slapping a brand-name label on it and charging more.

You guys are welcome to try this oil and let us know how you make out.
I'm not that brave. I only use brand-name full-synthetic oils in my expensive engines, and it will take an awful lot of convincing to make me try anything else.

Re: With NextGen Oil, Valvoline Hopes Drivers Heed the Green Call
I probably wouldn't do an extended drain interval with it without at least a UOA at 4k miles in my car, or I'd throw it in the wife's Accord with 156k miles on it (I think we got our money's worth ). I'd give it a shot if I could find it cheaper than $40 on Amazon for a case of 6 quarts as well... I'm reading on BITOG that it's been seen at Walmart ($26 for 5 quart jug, similarly priced to Mobil1), so I guess between the Nextgen and G-oil (and maybe some clearance oils), a trip to a few Wally Worlds in town is in order!
For those willing to try (myself included), I found a rebate coupon for 50% off ($13 off $26 jug), which puts this full synthetic in the price range of most conventionals...
An Exclusive Offer for the Friends & Family of G-Oil
