Hydrogen-powered cars may get their H2 from urine
An office building with 200 to 300 workers could generate 2 kilowatts of power,

This smell of success is... --Ed.
The shower is well known as a source of good ideas. But the toilet? Equally promising, says Gerardine Botte, a professor of chemical and biomolecular engineering at Ohio University who has developed a technology to generate hydrogen fuel from urine.
Botte recognized that urine contains two compounds that could be a source of hydrogen: ammonia and urea. Place an electrode in wastewater, apply a gentle current, and voila: hydrogen gas that can be used to power a fuel cell.... [Read More]

This is less renewable energy generation than reducing the energy required for ammonia treatment by using the output from electrolysis.
The company is also marketing their technology for use in scrubbers in power plants.

Not sure if urine would be practical, but synthetic solid urea is low cost and sustainable.. and it holds a lot of energy in a compact form. You can either use a nickel electrode electrolysis or simply heat up a small quantity of solid urea to 200° C or so.
If I remember correctly a 10kg cartridge of solid urea would give out enough H2 for a thousand mile range car.

Urea is also known as carbamide.. my mouthwash has it, safe stuff.
The stuff we used in old noisemaker toy cannons was calcium carbide, that and water releases acetylene gas.

200 workers for 2 kw, so it would take 1000 for 10kw to equal a Volt.
