Re: 1983 honda civic 1500 auto with ac
OMG! I had a 83 1300 FE with a 5 speed.
Not many left. Not a fan of the auto, but for the right price I'd love to have one of these again, they're rare now. Most rusted out. Not sure about parts, but would be helpful to know a good mechanic, or perhaps a parts car.
*Sigh* someday.

Is it the 1300cc or 1500cc CVCC?

IIRC, the "Hondamatic" transmissions weren't very good for fuel economy. If your primary interest is FE, I think I'd pass on it.

Visit your library's reference desk. It should have two Kelly Blue Books - one for current cars, and one for older cars like that '83 Civic. Personally, I wouldn't go near it. It's probably got a non-collapsible steering wheel that will go right through your heart in a 35 mph crash, the two-speed automatic probably never locks up for fuel economy, and you'd be dead meat in a serious crash (no crush zones, no side impact strengthening, no air bags, no engine drop-down).

Re: 1983 honda civic 1500 auto with ac
NADA appraisal tool puts it at $1550-$2250 but doesn't have allowance for AT vs MT or actual mileage. Seems that any car before 1990 is considered 'classic' and they are assumed to have unusually low mileage because they are otherwise almost worthless.
I pulled the 1983 EPA mileage numbers for the car. These are unadjusted, so they represent roughly what any one of us can do with a car using beginner/intermediate techniques:
Civic 91CID (1500cc) 3AT - 31/37 34 combined.
Same engine/same car with 5MT shows 35/46 39 combined.
For comparison, the unadjusted EPA for the 2011 Civic 1.8L 5AT is 31/51/38
The '83 Civic's 31 city matches the 2011 Civic 1.8L 5AT and also the Aveo 1.6L 4AT
The '83 Civic's 37 hwy matches the Nissan Rogue AWD 2.5L CVT, Lincoln MKZ 3.5V6 6AT, Cadilllac CTS and STS AWD 6AT, and the Buick Lacrosse 3.6L 6AT. My, how far we've come in fuel economy over the last 30 years...
It wouldn't be a bad car for low speed around town errands, but it's not a highway car by any means. Your 2006 Malibu 2.2L 4AT, in comparison, is 26/41 31 combined - a better highway car.

My take is pass on it. A small engine with auto transmission is not exacly mileage minded. Around town might be ok but get on the highway is a diff story.
