Re: New 3 generation Prius III
BTW, What do most monitor on the Scan Gauge other than RPM and water temp?
I am asking for recommendations to help my gas mileage. I assume IGN would be another.
Other recommendations?

Re: New 3 generation Prius III
Well, I did it!
My daughter came home this weekend. I borrowed my Scan Gauge. I followed the instructions on the reference from above Ksstathead( thanks a bunch ). Now one beep when I engage reverse This is a tremendous improvement.
I did drive the car with the Gauge on it. It is set up to display iMPG. I was surprised to see that when I was in electric mode or coasting down a hill after the car warmed up, the gauge displayed some small fuel consumption. This was on the order of 1500 mpg, but it didn't go to 9999 like I expected.(?)

It always says 0.02GPH even when gliding.

Re: New 3 generation Prius III
I must say that in general I am impressed. You may have seen on the news that we have had lots of snow and ice this last week here in north Georgia. This is a rare occurrence. We have no equipment to remove snow and/or ice from the roads. It happens when the sun comes out and melts the snow. Then over night it freezes into ice. Real fun! You guys up north must think this is normal, but we do not down here. This is the first heavy snow we have had since 1993. I had 5.5 inches I measured at my home. Then we had freezing rain on top of that.
The Prius has had no trouble with the slippery conditions. I have had to slow down a little and I have blocked off 75% of my front lower grill. This morning the temperature was 18F and I got 61 mpg according to the trip computer. This is for my 16 mile commute. I have figured out on the highway that the trip computer is approximately 5% optimistic. I am assuming that carries over to the suburban drive I make every day. This means a real 58 mpg approximately. That is good for the temperature, but onward and upward.
I have figured out that the engine will cool off enough at stop lights with the heater fan running and cause the engine to crank up. This seems a terrible waste to run an engine just to heat up the interior (me). I started turning the fan off except when the engine is running to power me up hills. Then it is creating waste heat to warm me.
I use to do something similar with the HCHII and the AC. I would keep the AC off except when the ice was powering the car. I depended on the cooling during those periods. This minimized the impact on the traction battery. If I just put it on auto, it would run the traction battery to nothing real quick.

Re: New 3 generation Prius III
My progress with the new Prius continues. I filled up recently and found the following:
2272 ODO 503.7 mi on tank 9.522 gal (US) used gives 52.9 mpg
The computer continues to exaggerate; it said 56.6. Too bad the manufactures cannot provide software that learns from its mistakes like the Scan Gauge does. I consider the 52.9 acceptable considering the car is not broke in yet and the weather has be very cold and icy (see my previous post) or slightly warmer (39F) and raining.
The Scan Gauge allowed me to get the Prius all set up the way I like it. Here again I believe all the manufactures should have this capability built in. None of them do.
This is my first fill up with the Scan Gauge. It will learn to calculate my correct MPG.
My commute is 16 miles of surface roads. There are 28 traffic signals on my normal route. The fun part is these surface roads in Atlanta area are all hilly. The only flats are either at the top of the hill before you start down or at the bottom before you start back up. This has caused me to use a modified pulse and glide. I pulse up the hill while loosing speed and glide down the hill while gaining speed and charging the battery. I use the EV to cover the small flats and maintain the speed I have.
This use has surprised me with the Scan Gauge (SC). When I sit at a red light, the engine off, warm up complete the SC shows 0.02 GPH. However, when I glide I often exceed 45mph and the motor starts. After it stabilizes the GPH will indicate 0.00; the RPM will show 1000 to 1100 and IGN 10. This is with 4-5 bars of charge. I guess this leads me to the question of why this type of behavior is displayed. If the fuel flow will go to 0.00 why does it not say that when the engine is off? Computers are funny things; software is even funnier.

Re: New 3 generation Prius III
That (erroneous fuel usage when the engine is off) is a common issue with current generation Toyotas.

Re: New 3 generation Prius III
I'm getting similar error: if the in-dash says 4.8 liters/100km, the calculated is invariably higher, around 5.2 liters/100km. As far as the car "learning" from it's error, I suspect Toyota likes it dumb: the errors reported are so consistant, and span the generations.
