Achieves the best fuel economy of the non-hybrids.

2011 Japanese Toyota Vits (Yaris here) – New interior/exterior and more fuel efficient.

Toyota Japanese Domestic Market (JDM) version of the redesigned "Vitz" compact equipped with a 1.3L gasoline engine and the Toyota’s latest Start/Stop system has achieved Japan's best fuel efficiency rating not including hybrids and micros.

The new Vitz, scheduled for launch in Japan before the end of this year, has a fuel efficiency of 62.3 mpgUS under the Japanese 10-15 test cycle and exceeds by more than 25% the mandatory level required under the 2010 national standards. Under t Japanese latest JC08 test cycle, the vehicle has a fuel efficiency of 51.3 mpgUS.

Emissions of both nitrogen oxides and non-methane hydrocarbons have also been reduced in the vehicle, with levels 75% lower than the 2005 standards. Under the Japanese government's taxation system for environment friendly vehicles, the new Vitz qualifies for a 75% reduction in the automobile weight tax and automobile acquisition tax, and qualifies for a 50% reduction in the automobile tax.

A US based Yaris hybrid for 2012 is still not out of the question but unlikely due to the Yen/Dollar ratio and upfront costs.

I'd rather see a Scion hybrid than a Yaris hybrid. Despite the fact that the Scion and Yaris are (internally) pretty much the same car, the Scion has the "cool" factor and the Yaris is as exciting as decaf coffee.
