Ford to Sell Most of Its Mazda Stake

Ford’s chief executive, Alan R. Mulally, plans to refocus on the iconic brand.

Ford continues to concentrate its efforts and strengthen its business fundamentals. Where will the company be in 5-years?

Shifting its focus to faster-growing emerging markets, Ford will sell most of its longstanding stake in Japan’s Mazda Motor, part of a wider push by the Detroit automaker to buttress its return to healthy profits.

Ford Motor Company today announced it will change its stake in Mazda Motor Corporation to 3.5 percent from 11 percent. The transaction is expected to be completed Friday.

Ford said the decision to reduce its ownership stake in Mazda allows it to increase flexibility as it continues to pursue growth in key emerging markets. Ford said it plans to remain one of Mazda’s largest shareholders and remains committed to its strategic partnership with Mazda, which spans more than 30 years.

Ford and Mazda will continue to cooperate in areas of mutual benefits such as key joint ventures and exchange of technology information, Ford said.

Re: Ford to Sell Most of Its Mazda Stake

Hi Sean:

Mazda was purchase when it was under stress so IIRC, Ford did not pay all that much for them?

While Mazda was probably a good fit quite a few years back thanks in part to the Mazda supplied 2.3L being imported and installed in any number of Fords (the Ranger for one ) and the Mazda3 underpinnings going into the European Focus, those days are long gone. Ford chassis tuners are every bit as good at suspension and handling tweaks as anyone in the world. When it comes to engines, Ford appears to have almost eveyrone licked as well with their new 1.0 – 3.5L EcoBoost lineup and of course the infamous ECOnetic diesels overseas and the Power Stroke here in the US.

Mazda’s lineup appears to be again quickly and unless they get the Sky-x program into the consumer marketplace quickly, it might be a very tough few years for the once mighty Mazda. Even then, the FE and performance advances are barreling in from everybody and the Mazda series other than maybe the 5 is being passed by the Korean’s, some Domestics and the European’s.

Re: Ford to Sell Most of Its Mazda Stake

The question is what are they doing with the cash (they are getting cash, right?). I haven't read Ford financials lately. I don't think they're having domestic cash flow issues, so I'd guess that they're doubling down their investment in China.

Mazda might look at this as a backdoor into China which does not always treat Japanese interests kindly.

Hi Rich:

They are using it to pay down some of their debt while still expanding on every Continent.

This doesn't sound like much of a strategic partnership from Mazda's perspective!
