For ambient lighting, fluorescent lights are more efficient. Where LEDs really shine (pun intended) is in the realm of small indicators, low level directional/accent lighting. Pretty much any light in a car is a good candidate for an LED replacement. Even LED headlights are possible, but complicated and pricey for the DIYer.
