Can a plug beat the Toyota Prius?
Is a plug-in Prius the better Prius?
HYBRIDCARBLOG - June 24, 2010
Everybody has an opinion. Thus, when it comes to calling any consumer product the best, it’s usually easiest just to let the numbers do the talking.
Hence, in terms of hybrid cars and fuel economy in the US, for instance, the Toyota Prius easily stands out as the best. Certainly, the Prius isn’t the favorite pick of many hybrid buyers; however, in terms of overall sale’s numbers, the Prius simply squashes the competition.
But can a plug change that?
In a very interesting plug-in Toyota Prius review this morning, InsideLine calls the Toyota Prius the “best version of tomorrow’s electric vehicle.”
Obviously, GM and Nissan, for instance, would disagree... [Read More]

Re: Can a plug beat the Toyota Prius?
I didn't buy our Prius because of the low price, though it was low enough for me to consider compared to others in the segment.
I bought my Prius first and foremost as my first step toward US energy independence, support bringing our military home from oil conflict countires and my enjoyment of efficiency.
Oil is simply not expensive enough right now for most of the people I know to change their habits. I have said before, I live in the land of Suburbans, Tahoes and Escalades. The type that drives these vehicles just because they can and want too, will be a tough nut to crack. So far, not one has asked me about my Prius after several have seen me in it.
I have a feeling some think only a pompous a@@ would drive such a car. Doesn't bother me though in the least.

We need to get to the point where people think that way of those who drive Suburbans, Tahoes and Escalades.

Maybe it's just that they think it might be like asking a Trekker why they like Star Trek.
I've not been asked either. Our friends know what I'm like.

Re: Can a plug beat the Toyota Prius?
If it's about cost then lots of Prius owners shouldn't buy one but they do.
If I could have bought a Prius PHEV for $4k more I'd have jumped at it as long as I could have it in a II. Even though my circumstances mean that it wouldn't be as big a benefit to me as it would be for others, it would still reduce consumption.
But I really wouldn't stump up the $1k gouging fee for it.

Re: Can a plug beat the Toyota Prius?
Hi All:
The 2011 Prius PHEV is really, really and I mean really nice. Going by a triple sized pack (Li-Ion should mean nothing in terms of cost vs. NiMH) and what it should cost us, the consumer, you are looking at a PHEV 12/13 at maybe $25 to $26K to start. The LEAF and VOLT cannot come close to that but then again, they are much more capable than 12/13 miles on EV.
I will take a 2011 Prius PHEV-12/13 please and make it a package III for $25K
Good Luck
Wayne
