Ledford man claims unique fuel mixture reduces auto emissions
One ounce of diesel fuel per 10 gallons of gasoline.
Brian Deneal - DAILYREGISTER - June 22, 2010
Hydrocarbons reduced! What does it do to MPG? --Ed.
John Mullinix of Ledford has acquired a provisional patent on a fuel mixture he says will dramatically reduce the amount of noxious emissions from automotive engines.
The mixture is simple: One ounce of diesel fuel per 10 gallons of gasoline.
Mullinix has reports from John A. Logan College and Southern Illinois University on vehicles tested using his formula that indicate significant declines in hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide and nitrous oxide.
The study at SIU involved a Ford F-150 pickup truck.
Hydrocarbon emissions -- unburned fuel in the form of carbon soot responsible for smog -- after flowing through a catalytic converter tested at 21.700 parts per million with gasoline. That same gasoline with the 1 oz. of diesel added tested at 10.005 parts per million -- a 51 percent hydrocarbon emission reduction.... [Read More]

"John Mullinix demonstrates with a piece of burning newspaper how when using his fuel mixture his car sucks in oxygen from the tailpipe, helping the catalytic converter to burn fuel more completely."
Credibility? There is no way oxygen can be sucked in from the tailpipe all the way to the catalytic converter on the other end of the exhaust system.
Is this the next acetone?

Snake oil. Won't hurt anything at that level, though, and might be beneficial in keeping intake deposits soft.

I wouldn't be too quick to say oxygen can't be drawn in through the tail pipe. Most cars have a slight overlap where the intake valve is opened and the exhaust valve hasn't closed yet. This is why exhaust valves can be warped if there is a leak in the exhaust or when running no exhaust at all. Whether or not the mixture works is a different matter all together. I say testing is needed before the knee-jerk snake oil proclamation is made. Because if it isn't tested and it really is snake oil, the proponents of the stuff will keep claiming it works because there is no real proof that it doesn't work.

Maybe part of the FE increase was a reduction of ethanol.

Re: Ledford man claims unique fuel mixture reduces auto emissions
There is an experiment behind this. The article shows his back ground to be in chemical engineering and fuels. It would would be interesting to see the experiment model and trials. If its true, it would an easy, cheap way to live up to the Clean part of CleanMPG.

Re: Ledford man claims unique fuel mixture reduces auto emissions
I have been doing this with my 92 Civic VX ever since I first read the article in June.
I can't say if it gained any MPG, or if it reduced emissions.
But it didn't seem to harm anything either, so I'm going to continue adding it till I go thru the annual emissions test.
The way I see it is if it keeps the catalytic converter clean I'm happy.

WD-40 - are you able to replicate his test of air being drawn in using a burning piece of paper like his picture shows in the article that started this thread? Thanks.

John Mullinix lives here in the same community. I will try to contact him sometime and talk with him.
