Hyundai Sonata wins Family Sedan Shootout
More good news for the feisty Korean automaker.
Wayne Gerdes - CleanMPG - May 11, 2010
The gorgeous 2011 Hyundai Sonata - $19,195 to start and 28 mpgUS combined on the 08 EPA.
Hyundai’s all-new 2011 Sonata topped a field of eight popular midsize sedans to win the Cars.com “$25,000 Family Sedan Shootout.” The analysis consisted of six automotive journalists (including Jim Healey and Chris Woodyard from USA Today and Brian Robinson from PBS's “MotorWeek”), a family of four and three days to determine: What's the best family sedan you can buy for $25,000 or less? The answer was clearly “Sonata” as the new Hyundai model easily outpaced the field with 794 points on a 1000-point scale, beating second-place finisher Camry by 42.
Editors said, “The Sonata’s striking design won over most, but it was the whole package that grabbed the title … None of the competitors came close.”
Hyundai’s all-new 2011 Sonata represents a modern approach to the traditional midsize sedan segment by using only advanced four-cylinder engines, emotional design and luxury features offered with Hyundai’s strong value proposition. The Sonata launched with a new Theta II 2.4L gasoline direct injection (GDI) engine and in-house six-speed automatic transmission. The vehicle offers class-leading fuel economy of 22 mpg city/35 mpg highway and 198 horsepower standard.
Hyundai also announced the 2.0L Theta II turbocharged GDI four-cylinder engine and Sonata Hybrid models at the New York International Auto Show, rounding out an exciting new 2011 Sonata lineup.
The challenge ranked each competitor on a 10-point scale in 10 categories. Reviewers accounted for 60 percent of the total; the parents accounted for the remaining 40 percent. The maximum score possible was 1,000 points.
The Results- Hyundai Sonata; 794 points
- Toyota Camry; 752 points
- Suzuki Kizashi; 731 points
- Mazda6; 724 points
- Honda Accord; 723 points
- Nissan Altima; 711 points
- Chevrolet Malibu; 697 points
- Ford Fusion; 669 points
Where the 2011 Sonata really gains traction is with its feature full appointments and safety at an inexpensive price.

Re: Hyundai Sonata wins Family Sedan Shootout
Watching Hyundai over the last 10 years reminds me of Honda's slow success. Keep it up Hyundai.

Re: Hyundai Sonata wins Family Sedan Shootout
Interesting note:
At the dealer where we picked up our 2011 Sonata this past Monday, the sales manager said they had 9 of the 2011s in stock, and all but one had deposits on them. They were holding one aside for test drives. They are telling people when the next truck is coming in and people are buying them off the truck.
The same dealer has 24 2010 models in stock. And for those 2010's, they have $2500 in cash on the hood or 0% for 60 plus $750 bonus cash. And still, there are so many people are waiting for the next batch of 2011s to arrive. That goes to show how much interest has been stirred by the styling, pricing and content of the new Sonata. The sales manager said that they temporarily halted production of the SantaFe at the Birmingham plant to dedicate all the lines to Sonata production, and they still can't keep up with demand.
Seems to me that the the Family Sedan Shootout reached the same conclusion - the new Sonata is one of the hottest sellers in the segment since its intro.

Re: Hyundai Sonata wins Family Sedan Shootout
It is good to see the family sedan segment being improved on. I really like the new Sonata, it seems to be a well made and well equipped car at a decent price, and best of all it's not a Honda..LOL.
If i were buying a new family sedan today, i would buy the Kizashi. It is priced about the same as the Sonata, and it has AWD. That feature is very important to me.

Re: Hyundai Sonata wins Family Sedan Shootout
Interesting. I see your location, which helps explain that. That feature (AWD) is anti-important to me. I would much rather have FWD than AWD.

Re: Hyundai Sonata wins Family Sedan Shootout
I would prefer without AWD as well, makes me wonder what would be possible if we could have purchased my wife's Subaru withouth the AWD. Too bad it is standard on all their vehicles.

Re: Hyundai Sonata wins Family Sedan Shootout
From the multiple articles I've read, the CVT coupled with the Kizashi's AWD shifts pretty mushy, and feels sloppy the whole time you're driving. While I have yet to find and drive one myself, 6-10 reviews that say "great car, awesome that it has AWD, but the CVT is [insert derogatory remark]" lead me to go into it with a critical eye.
