Idling fines
Motorisits are being fined for parking with their engines running under a new scheme aimed at reducing polution.
Heidi Blake - TELEGRAPH - Mar 3, 2010
If gas was more expensive, there would not be much idling --Ed.
A council has told traffic wardens to issue £20 penalty notices to drivers who keep their engines on after pulling over and the charge could double to £40 if it is not paid quickly.
Anyone found to have their engine running without reason could be fined under the scheme, run by North Lincolnshire Council.
The move has been billed as an attempt to reduce pollution from car exhausts, but angry motorists said the fines were petty and a waste of resources.... [Read More]

Re: Idling fines
I must see this several times a week around me. I just saw a guy this morning around 9:00 run into a gas station mini market I was at, left the car idling while he got a cup of coffee.

Re: Idling fines
What? Only fined £20 for idling??? No wonder they call it petty.
Cheers;

Re: Idling fines
So... If you own a Hummer and leave the engine idling while refueling, does the tank ever fill up?

LOL! I saw a guy filling up his stretched hummer once and thought the same thing. I almost said it to him too but these guys can get awful touchy about it.

Re: Idling fines
It drives me crazy seeing people eating in their cars in fast food parking lots or waiting in the car for someone in the store, while idling the whole time to keep the AC on. Just go into the air conditioned restaurant or store!

Re: Idling fines
The problem with idling is not just that it wastes gas, but due to less effective combustion it pollutes disproportionately. I've seen several reports that idling spews 3x as much Benzene as driving down the road.
That's a BIG DEAL in my part of the country, where since our air is otherwise cleaner than other regions and most of our gas comes from Benzene-rich Alaskan crude, the EPA allows gasoline to contain several times the Benzene that it does elsewhere. As a result the Pacific NW has the highest Benzene levels in the country, with many urban areas well in excess of levels considered safe. Thousands of us are getting cancer so the oil companies can save a couple cents a gallon. Meanwhile, unnecessary idling is still common -- and certainly not illegal as in the UK!

Re: Idling fines
The evil consumer I see most mornings has a farm with a corn field at the road but a huge mansion way off (1/4 mile at the most). The Escalade is parked and idling outside the gated fence while mom and child wait for the bus, bet it was started remotely long before anyone got in. Poor kid can't walk from mega mansion to street to wait for the bus in the cold. Bet they are organic farmers though. The worker's quarters is up by the road.
