Toyota Recall -- Driver error or manufacturer defect?

Fast Lane Daily - Fast Lane Daily - 02/25/2010

Just trying to put the otherside of the argument. --Ed.

After all the hype and raised opinions I think these guys do a decent job on taking a step back and comparing the number of confirmed incidents of unattended acceleration compared to driver error. They also make a jab at the Convenience options that make it harder to stop a car. Though they don't mention the lack of Engine Vacuum for brakes at WOT.

Disclaimer: They are gear heads, and it is geared to a younger crowd.

Re: Toyota Recall -- Driver error or manufacturer defect?

The numbers of deaths do to DRIVER ERROR, compared to the number of deaths attributed to problems with the Floor mats and sticking throttles makes a strong point.

392K deaths total, with 21K of those in a Toyota being killed due to "driver error"
over the last 10 years. We are having congressional hearings over at most 35 deaths due to technical problems over the last 10 years. .00166% of all deaths in a Toyota are attributed to problems of floor mats and sticking throttles.

In the perfect world there would be no deaths but it happens and everyone of those deaths we can prevent we should.

Over 20 people of them 15 police officers have been killed and several seriously burned by exploding Ford Crown Victoria fuel tanks. I never remember any one in Congress being that concerned about that issue.

Did you know more people have been incinerated in a Crown Victoria Police Interceptor than in a Ford Pinto.

In Medieval times, you had the Black Death plague. A huge percentage of the population of Europe died in the plague. People were very unhappy over that. Afterwards, witch-burning became a popular pastime.

A year ago, we had a stock market crash and a vicious recession. The Big Three US automakers almost went out of existence. 2 of 3 went bankrupt. It was a very bad thing all around. Later, Toyota-bashing became a popular pastime.

Before the Firestone tire thing, Fords were accused of jumping out of Park and racing away uncontrollably. Got a flurry of media attention, but didn't get the government on a witch hunt like they're doing now.
