Canadian Toyota owners to receive brake override system

Toyota extends brake override feature to provide an additional measure of customer confidence.

Wayne Gerdes - CleanMPG - Feb. 23, 2010

2010 Toyota Camry – One of the recalled vehicles to be upgraded.

Toyota Canada is following Toyota US as it announced this morning that it too will install a brake override system on an expanding range of customers’ vehicles to provide an additional measure of confidence. This braking system enhancement will automatically reduce engine power when the brake pedal and the accelerator pedal are applied simultaneously under certain driving conditions.

The following models have been added to the list of vehicles that will receive the brake override upgrade: 2005-2010 Tacoma and 2009-2010 Venza. In addition, Toyota Canada will provide the brake override system for owners of 2008-2010 Sequoia vehicles. Toyota previously announced that the system would be installed onto the 2007-2010 Camry, 2005-2010 Avalon, and the 2007-2010 Lexus ES 350, 2006-2010 IS 350 and 2006-2010 IS 250 models.

In the release, Toyota Canada added the following: “The brake override feature is not an integral part of the campaigns currently being undertaken by Toyota Canada which include Tacoma and Venza models but is being added as an extra measure of confidence for Toyota owners. It will be installed on Tacoma and Venza at the same time as the improvements previously announced for those models are performed. Notification to customers regarding brake override installation for Sequoia will be sent separately.

In addition to upgrades on existing vehicles, this feature is scheduled to be incorporated into future new production of most Toyota and Lexus models sold in Canada by the end of 2010.

Extension of the brake override system to the expanded range of models is the latest step in Toyota’s commitment to building the safest and most reliable vehicles on the road and to ensuring our customers are confident in the cars and trucks they drive.”

A safer vehicle is a better vehicle.

Re: Canadian Toyota owners to receive brake override system

Umn, I feel like we already have universal Canadian brake-over-ride systems in place around here.

They're usually just called "potholes"

Legal disclaimer: the above opinion doesn't represent CleanMPG, its moderators, its detractors, nor any advertiser on the site. Fact, it doesn't even represent the contributor's feelings half the time, cause half the time he's half out of it, trying to get his Scanguage to lie about how badly he had to deke around said potholes. Potholes has nothing to do with owning a Pot Bellied Pig, so all you animal rights types can go sue somebody else too. Don't bother tailgating the author, cause he never uses the rear-vue mirror anyway, cause it's usually been bumped out of position by the last pothole encountered. If you are an ambulance-chaser, a litiguous type, someone who hates smiling or if you ever voted for Paul McCartney and vegetibilarianism, please skip to the next post --- there's no "go" left around here, and my last $200 went to the local government for pothole reduction. That didn't work either.

No more heel toe downshifts.

Re: Canadian Toyota owners to receive brake override system

There are probably more people who died from the recent problems than the number of people doing heel-toe in the vehicles affected by the brake problems.

Re: Canadian Toyota owners to receive brake override system

Heel-toe may be possible depending on how this is implemented. With VW's brake override system, throttle inputs are accepted if the brake is pressed first. The brake only overrides the throttle if the brake is pressed after the throttle.

Note carefully that the Prius is not mentioned, because guess
what? It's already got it.

That is a cool solution.
Thanks for that tidbit.
