Honda: New big car hybrid system by 2013
....also working on small diesel engines
INDIATIMES - Febv 19, 2010
Could it be diesels are not quite clean enough and Honda is forced to play catch up in hybrids? --Ed.
Honda Motor Co has taken a big step towards developing a new hybrid system for larger cars, its head of automobile research and development
said on Friday, indicating a finished product could be about three years away.
"We've left the research stage and entered the field of development," Tomohiko Kawanabe, chief operating officer of automobile R&D at Japan's No.2 automaker, told Reuters in an interview.... [Read More]

a hybrid system that can be mounted on larger cars such as the Odyssey minivan and Pilot SUV.

It's about time! I'd prefer a diesel, but this is a good option to consider, as well.

Re: Honda: New big car hybrid system by 2013
I wonder if this means that Honda might be able to create a hybrid truck too?

Re: Honda: New big car hybrid system by 2013
Considering the Ridgeline is just another body on top of the same Odyssey / Pilot platform, I see no reason they couldn't.

Re: Honda: New big car hybrid system by 2013
There could be concerns with towing. If the battery gets pulled in too much for extra torque it could fail early (as it is notorious for doing in both the 5spd Insight-I and the 5spd HCH-I).

Didn't the automatic trans, along with software updates, resolve that? These models are already auto-only.

Re: Honda: New big car hybrid system by 2013
Hi, Andrew -- I'm not sure how much load those CVTs can handle. If they switch to something closer to the powersplit (ECVT?) used by Toyota and Ford it might be less likely to have issues?

Crap. Somebody needs to crack the diesel hybrid, it's a shame they've dropped it.

Re: Honda: New big car hybrid system by 2013
What's stopping them from using a standard automatic? It's not as good as a CVT for fine control, but it could work, couldn't it?

Re: Honda: New big car hybrid system by 2013
Good question. I had just assumed that the parasitic drag associated with a standard automatic transmission would be much more than that associated with a CVT (due to viscous couplings). Perhaps an automated manual or a dual (dry) clutch transmission would be a good choice?
