2011 Hyundai Sonata Turbo, Hybrid: 2010 New York Auto Show
The 2011 Sonata is the most interesting car in the family sedan class, and it doesn't even have a V6.
Erin Riches - INSIDELINE - February 17, 2010
Will this be a "strong" hybrid to compete with the Camry and Fusion hybrids? --Ed.
LA JOLLA, California Turbocharged and hybrid versions of the 2011 Hyundai Sonata will debut at the 2010 New York Auto Show, Hyundai's head of product planning, Scott Margason, announced today via the company's official Twitter account.
Equipped with a direct-injected and turbocharged 2.0-liter inline four-cylinder, the Hyundai Sonata Turbo will be positioned above Sonatas with the normally aspirated 2.4-liter engine. The 2.0-liter turbo is likely to make in the neighborhood of 240-250 horsepower a step up from the 198-hp rating on the 2.4-liter engine.
We don't know many details yet about the 2011 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid. Hyundai has said it will use lithium-ion batteries but will not offer plug-in capability. Beyond that, it's a good bet that the hybrid Sonata will combine one of the four-cylinder engines with a... [Read More]

Ooooh! 2.4 for the normal ones, and this one gets a 2.0 turbo? Hyundai has had a series of "the right stuff" announcements lately.

Re: 2011 Hyundai Sonata Turbo, Hybrid: 2010 New York Auto Show
I hope that 2.4L isn't overkill for a hybrid sedan. The "sports car" hybrid that Honda tried a few years ago (Accord Hybrid) didn't work out so well.
Hopefully, since it is a Hyundai, it will be priced to sell. Even a mild hybrid system can be effective if implemented correctly.

Well, Toyota uses a 2.4 in the Camry hybrid. I'm guessing this is designed to be a direct competitor to that.

Re: 2011 Hyundai Sonata Turbo, Hybrid: 2010 New York Auto Show
2.4L is a standard size for midsize cars currently. If you get much bigger, the pistons start getting quite big and it might as well be a V6. For comparison, my V6 is a 2.5L.
