Questions and Answers
Q1: What is the condition?
A1: In certain 2010 model year Prius vehicles, a small number of customers have reported experiencing an inconsistent brake feel during slow and steady application of the brakes on rough or slick road surfaces when the anti-lock brake system (ABS) is activated in an effort to maintain tire traction.
Q2: What is the cause of the condition?
A2: This condition is as a result of braking system switching between regenerative and hydraulic braking. The system, in normal operation, engages and disengages rapidly (many times per second) as the control system senses and reacts to tire slippage. A production change was introduced last month, improving the ABS system’s response time, as well as the system’s overall sensitivity to tire slippage.
Q3: Are there any other Toyota or Lexus vehicles involved?
A3: At this time, Toyota’s investigation has focused on a small number of reports related to the 2010 Prius and are confirming whether other models, including the Lexus HS250h, are affected.
Q4:How many incidents of this condition have been reported?
A4: Toyota Canada is investigating a small number of reports and is confirming the number related to this specific condition.
Q5: Have there been any accidents reported?
A5: Toyota Canada is not aware of any confirmed cases in Canada related to this condition.
Q6: What is Toyota going to do? Will Toyota conduct a recall campaign?
A6: Toyota is committed to our customers’ safety and their confidence in our vehicles and will take appropriate action to address this condition as necessary.
Q7: What should owners do if they experience the condition?
A7: If you experience inconsistent brake feel, particularly when driving on rough roads or slick conditions, you should continue to steadily apply pressure on the brakes with greater force.
Q8: Is this condition related to the concern related to unintended acceleration?
A8: No, this condition is not related to either the floor mat entrapment recall or the sticking pedal recall currently in action.
