Unhappy Might Have Stripped the Oil Pan Thread

I change my own oil.

Tonight I went in the wrong direction and striped the thread - hopefully on the plug - not the pan.

Looks like I need scheduled maintanence this week....and hope the oil plug will hold in the meantime.

Re: Might Have Striped the Oil Pan Thread

Hi Chuck:

___You know those are magnesium pans and they are very expensive! I would get it to the dealer ASAP and pray that bolt does not come out on the way or there will be an even more expensive repair. Remember what happened to your CRX after its early repair. Your Insight could be in for a similar problem if you are not extremely careful getting it back to the dealer. A steel bolt’s threads are a lot tougher then the magnesium pan’s threads so do not hope or guess here. I have read of a Helicoil insert fix and I have read of complete replacements. I hope you can receive the first.

___On your next change, find a Honda dealer that will charge you just $9.00 - $10.00 with your own oil and filter and bring it in there. If they strip it, they pay for it.

___My fingers are crossed for you on this.

___Good Luck

___Wayne

Re: Might Have Striped the Oil Pan Thread

I've got extra oil and a flashlight for Monday's work commute.

It seems like the bolt will hold for the time being.

e-mailed the dealer

Will keep everyone posted.

Re: Might Have Striped the Oil Pan Thread

Hi Chuck:

___It is not having an extra quart of oil I am worried about. If that bolt comes out, you lose it all. If you see your oil light come up, shut her down immediately and even then, it may be to late.

___Good Luck

___Wayne

Re: Might Have Striped the Oil Pan Thread

My gut feeling is it would hold for a few days, although I'm not going to tempt fate like that.

Safe!

Just got back from the shop and they will do 105,000mile scheduled maintainence on top of fixing the threads (which they think will not be a problem). It's a chance to take care of some odds and ends.

Amazing how concern over an oil plug thread possibly ejecting can motive your to make a 85mpg work communte instead of a 75mpg one.

Can't hurt the engine if it isn't spinning!

The seconds it comes to a screeching halt is something I'm painfully familiar with on the 1974 CVCC Civic. It's how it died.

Don't have the picture, but for some reason, one headlight is fogged up but the other is not. Reminds me of the latest Bond villian - Le Chiffer.

Re: Might Have Stripped the Oil Pan Thread

As an alternative to a new pan or helicoil repair, you might consider epoxying in a Fumoto oil drain valve. Not really sure you have enough threads there for helicoil to work. Good luck.

Re: Might Have Stripped the Oil Pan Thread

I doubt that the threads are hurt. I hate Hondas (*&^$@#&^%(*&^ crush washers. Everytime I change the oil in our cars the action of the crush washer crushing always make me think the threads have let go. I changed the oil in the Accord over the Holiday. And yep,, when the washer crushed It felt like I had just pulled the threads out. So much so I pulled the plug to check. And this was using a torque wrench set at the 38 or 40 lbs. ( I always have to look the spec up.) Put another new crush washer on and redid it.

I hate crush washers!!!!
