Totally OT - New Computer

Day before Thanksgiving I got the computer bug and bought this. This difference in the minimum config is the hard drive is 250GB and it has a modem. I hope it will not only do Windows Vista effortlessly, but the version after that.

It may be that a better system could be found - I've been told to have someone build one from scratch.

The transition between the computers will be slow to avoid the new one crawling within six months. There are a lot of suspects in what makes my computers crawl:
  • I've always loaded a lot of apps (I've got a big system tray)
  • I'm running Norton, and it has a reputation for being a control freak and possibly slowing things down. Maybe I can tweak it up better...
  • Spyware may be slowing it down
Anyway, I want to scrutinize what is running and keep it to the essentials. Once everything is off the old computer, I might try linux.

Scary thing about my old computer - Windows will semi-load, but the desktop icons don't load - have to hard boot.

If this was a car, it's like it's got 500 pounds of barbells in the trunk.

If you're going to start down a new-ish road, how 'bout investigating
a different OS, while you're at it?

Re: Totally OT - New Computer

I tried Red Hat Linux 6-7 years ago and did something wrong at the very end that kept the PC from booting up in Windows or Linux. I'll wait until everything is safely off the old computer, then try Linspire and hope it does not expire.

Re: Totally OT - New Computer

ubuntu seems to be the most popular these days. And you can run it from a cd until you decide to install it.

Might I suggest downloading ad-aware (www.adaware.com) Or Spybot (www.spybot.com)? They're free downloads and good spy and ad program removal tools.

From tracking cookies to malicious ware, they seem to do a great job keeping things safe and clean.

Hi Chuck

Dont know what the new machine is. The link is dead.

As long as it has lots of HP and ram. Your good to go.

Good luck with the NIX. It can be loaded up to be a pig also.
