BMW’s new baby zeroes in on Fiesta Econetic

Sub-1-Series model sets sights on Ford and front-wheel drive will be most frugal BMW.

2012 BMW 0d – expect 75 + mpg and the complete luxury package to surround you.

In Europe, nobody appears to be sitting still including BMW. -- Ed.

BMW is heading into Ford Fiesta Econetic territory!

To ensure a unique experience, the 0-Series will get hi-tech aids such as an electronic diff and active damping – something that will be reflected in its elevated price tag, which is likely to start from around $26,400 USD (at today’s conversion rates).

Customers will be able to choose from the sleek three-door seen here and a more practical five-door.

... A range of powerful but clean gasoline and diesel motors should make this the most frugal BMW ever. A development of the 161bhp 1.5-litre three-cylinder turbodiesel, while an all-electric powertrain will follow at a later date... A concept car could be as little as 18 months away... [Read More]

If this is front wheel drive, BMW fails.

Why so negative, tjts1? Is there something wrong with a small front wheel drive platform?

Why so negative, tjts1? Not just on this topic, but in general. Both here and at ecomodder, most of your comments are negative and don't add much to the discussion.

Re: BMW’s new baby zeroes in on Fiesta Econetic

Because FWD provides lower drivetrain losses, more efficient packaging (read: reduced cost), and absolutely can be integrated into a supremely driveable platform if a manufacturer wants to. BMW can. Also on my list are FWD not being a major limitation until power levels significantly exceed 200HP and FWD being easier to manage for your average appliance driver.

I would prefer to be driving a RWD car for my own reasons, too, but to declare "if FWD then FAIL" is a little silly.

Re: BMW’s new baby zeroes in on Fiesta Econetic

This is a sweet little ride. For $27k, with the luxury that BMW brings to the table + 75 mpg, this thing is gonna sell like hotcakes!

Re: BMW’s new baby zeroes in on Fiesta Econetic

Hi Tjts:

___Having driven the 335d for more than a few thousand miles in the city, on the highway and on the track, the 0d would be the bomb. Much of the lux and handling of the 335d for the price of a loaded up HCH-II, Prius or TSX plus a lot more FE on the highway as well.

___It would be on my list as well as many others here.

___Now its time to start contributing vs. being a pain in the neck.

___Good Luck

___Wayne
