At the moment, the Shaners are enjoying the relative stability that sales for ethanol have brought to their lives.

Full employment does not require a Faustian deal --Ed.

That "comparatively better" farm economy is a leading reason Nebraska's unemployment rate is 4.9 percent, half the national average of 9.8 percent. Scan a state-by-state map of unemployment rates, and what jumps out is that most of the states well below the national average are those with agriculture-driven economies.

North Dakota, South Dakota and Nebraska, for example, are the only three states with unemployment below 5 percent.

...Watching their 12-row combine harvest the corn is a sight to behold, methodically scooping ears from the fields and dramatically increasing productivity. This corn won't end up on a dinner table but instead at a giant Cargill plant just up the road, where it is processed into ethanol and several corn byproducts....[Read More]

Re: Nebraska, the Dakotas with sub 5% unemployment. Reason: Ethanol

I'd say that the person who wrote the article has trouble with math. Ethanol production requires a lot of equipment but not much employment. Figure about 1000 people in Nebraska out of a labor force of about a million. Even if you apply some multipliers you only get 3000-5000 jobs, or .3 to .5% of employment.

More likely the economic stability Nebraska reflects the fact that the hard hit sectors of manufacturing, real estate development, and banking were relatively small parts of its economy before the crisis.

Hi Rich:

___Well said and its too bad an author working for a respected source (ok, not really respected all that much ) would put something like this together without more detail on overall Nebraska employment picture then the headline grabbing Ethanol title.

___Good Luck
