SPRINGFIELD - A city administrator said he will recommend to Mayor Domenic J. Sarno that the city purchase more hybrid vehicles.
Patrick J. Sullivan, executive director of parks, buildings and recreation management, said he will recommend by early October that an additional 20 to 25 hybrids be added to the city's fleet of vehicles over two years.
"I think it's the way to go," Sullivan said.
Last year the city purchased four 2009 Ford Escape Hybrids. Each sports utility vehicle cost $28,300.
Sullivan has been driving one of the Escape Hybrids, which uses no fuel when the driver is stopped in traffic. Last week he said he was getting 23 miles per gallon, compared to 11 miles per gallon from the Ford Expedition he used to drive.
