Ford’s European Focus BEV is as efficient as it is attractive

Why does Frankfurt get all the toys

Wayne Gerdes - CleanMPG - Sept. 16, 2009

2010 European Ford Focus BEV – 75 miles AER.

At the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show, Ford of Europe showed off its first of a fleet of Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) prototypes based on the Ford Focus. These vehicles were specially developed to participate in the UK Government's "Ultra-Low Carbon Vehicles" demonstration initiative next year.

The research program aims to test the technology's suitability for potential future application in Ford's European passenger car range.

A consortium of Ford, Scottish and Southern Energy and Strathclyde University will use the fleet of 15 prototype Ford Focus BEV vehicles and a charging infrastructure in and around the London Borough of Hillingdon from early 2010.

This new BEV demonstration fleet is being developed partly with public funding from the UK Government's Technology Strategy Board (TSB), which promotes innovative industry-led projects that reduce CO2 while benefitting the country's transport system.

“Electrification is a key element in the effective use of Ford's global resources and talents,” John Fleming, Chairman & CEO Ford of Europe said. “The development of this fleet of Focus BEV prototypes is an important step in our goal of delivering more efficient and sustainable mobility solutions that are affordable and practical for our customers. We are looking forward to working with the various project partners on developing a realistic solution and viable market for electric vehicles both in the UK and Europe."

Focus BEV Prototypes

The Focus BEV prototype is based on the current European Ford Focus and will use a new all-electric powertrain, provided by the strategic supplier Magna. This technology is based on that being developed for Ford's new-generation C-sized global vehicle architecture and which will be launched in North America in 2011.

To evaluate whether this technology is suitable for European road and driving conditions, a fleet of 15 European Focus BEV prototypes is being built. These cars will deliver local zero emission mobility without constraining the user needs and providing room for five passengers, a practical boot and other Ford Focus attributes.

Under the skin of the Ford Focus prototypes is a state-of-the-art Li-Ion battery pack with the capacity of 23 kWh and a chassis-mounted 134 HP permanent-magnet electric traction motor. The BEV will have an AER of up to 75 miles and a top speed of up to 85 mph. Charging the batteries will take between six to eight hours using a common European 230 volt outlet.

Key components from Ford’s hybrid technology including the electric climate control system. The high-voltage air-conditioning compressor is a key feature of the 2010 Ford Fusion Hybrid, recently introduced in the North American market.

Ford Focus BEV Specifications
  • Battery Technology - Li-Ion Tri-Metal

  • Battery Capacity - 23 kWh

  • Charging time - 6-8 hours (230 V grid)

  • Electric motor - Permanent-magnet motor

  • Max Power – 134 HP

Re: Ford’s European Focus BEV is as efficient as it is attractive

Are these retrofitted versions like what we saw in Detroit this year? If not, do they have the batteries mounted under the floorboard?

Inquiring minds want to know!

Re: Ford’s European Focus BEV is as efficient as it is attractive

OK, OK, Cut it out Wayne!!!

With each new article, we're just getting more and more pissed at Ford for not announcing to sell these great vehicles in the US. Any suggestions on what we are supposed to do with our anger? Who at Ford do we call to give them a piece of our mind. I know you know someone. Spit it out.

If the Prius is selling so well in our market, what the hell is Ford doing not intending thier high MPG or Bev's in the US? Better yet, please tell me I'm wrong on this.

We will be getting the Focus BEV in 2011. That's the car I hope to put in my garage.

Re: Ford’s European Focus BEV is as efficient as it is attractive

Hi Beatr911:

___As Sean posted, we are going to receive the same if not better equipped Ford Focus in 2010 and the Focus BEV will arrive in 2011.

___This is completely different than the current situation where we are stuck with the ancient US variant based off the Escort whereas the European’s received the hot handling (and far better looking) Mazda/Focus platform and sculpted body.

___Both the US and Euro next gen Focus’ will be based on the latest high performance and lighter weight chassis and the BEV will be ours as well

___We will not however be receiving the European's SuperDiesel in the form of the world class FE leading ECOnetic however ECOBoost will be available but its no TDCi, that is for sure. Also, expect a large price increase for the upcoming Focus with the ECOBoosted 1.6L or 2.0L. Probably priced more than a Civic similarly equipped

___As far as who to talk to, I know the right people but they would never allow me onto a Ford property ever again if I gave out their number

___Good Luck

___Wayne
