Over this side of the pond, the burglar has more rights, apparently. The same situation here would have the student jailed for a long time.

I must confess that the sword would seem to have been "excessive force." It is probably difficult to handle safely in tight quarters, too.
Not sure how I feel about this.

We have the right to protect ourselves here. Farmer Martin would be an unknown person had he lived here, instead of a convict and cause celebre.

Perhaps "habitual offenders" don't roam as freely on your side of the pond?
It is a sad state of affairs that we: 1.) have so much crime that 2.) we need to defend ourselves.

Re: Note to Burglars: Don't bring a switchblade to a Samuari fight
This is one of those riveting stories that has gaps.
I don't think the burgular should have been killed, except he kept on advancing.
Recently Texas passed a law making it legal such an intruder can be shot dead if it's clear they were threatening (break-in, had weapon, etc)....obviously some are concerned this could be abused.

The guy was a career criminal whose criminal history included
Quote:

more than two dozen arrests for burglary, breaking and entering and auto theft.
|
Good Riddance.
Many states have Castle Doctrine laws that exempt you from civil lawsuits. Unfortunately it doesn't look like Maryland has this.
