A perfect day on a perfect road

I had a killer mileage day on the Navajo and Hopi Reservations during my cross-country trip with my Scion xB. I drove from Gallup to Tuba City, 164.9 miles, and my mileage just kept getting better and better. It's a route with almost no traffic, so I could pulse up to 60 mph and glide down to 40 mph. That maximized my glide distances, and there were enough mesas with glide distances of ~5 miles to drag up my mileage.

At 81.8 miles on the trip, I was getting 54.7 mpg per my Scangauge. My calibration factor was 13.4%, even though 11.1% is more accurate, as I don't like to be surprised by disappointment when I fill up.

At 90 miles, i was up to 55.0 mpg. At 100.2 miles, my mileage was up to 56.9 mpg, and was still there at 115 miles. At 142 miles, I was still at 54.9 mpg, and the Scangauge trip mileage was right at 55 mpg driving into Tuba City. When I filled up, I got 59 (58.977) mpg actual mileage over the 164.9 miles, thanks to my Scangauge calibration conservatism.

I tanked up in Tuba City to preserve the excellent mileage before getting on busier roads to drive to St. George, UT. Over the next 210 miles, I was able to coax an indicated 49.7 mpg per the Scangauge. The Scangauge stands at 52.1 mpg avg for the day. With the calibration conservatism, that's safely over 50 mpg for the last half of the day, and about 55 mpg for the day.

I should mention I've driven on both reservations many times before, and have visited the sights and sites, like Monument Valley, Canyon de Chelly, Hubbell Trading Post, Navajo National Monument, Chaco Canyon, Antelope Slot Canyon, etc. The drive is beautifully scenic. This was my first time through as a hypermiler.

So this is what my Scion is capable of on a road free of restraints!

Re: A perfect day on a perfect road

Congrats on the gas mileage that's great! I've done some driving up there to St. George there are still great opportunities for good FE, I can get in the 40's on the 89 to the 389 and 59 to St George, I bet you could do better. Good luck.

Re: A perfect day on a perfect road

That's the route I took into St. George. Those downhills really boosted the mileage dropping into town.

Re: A perfect day on a perfect road

I was able to average 50 mpg all the way back to CA from UT. I took the Loneliest Highway in America, US 50 from Ely NV to Fernley NV, and used the same deep delta high speed pulse and glide, and got 60 mpg again on that leg of the trip. The real reason is a tank underfill, and the next tank suffered accordingly. When the gas shutoff occurred, the gas just rose out of the tank and spilled about .1 gallon

Re: A perfect day on a perfect road

Yeah, I'm impressed myself. I averaged 51.5 mpg over 1213 miles from Gallup NM to the Bay Area. Even with the short fill tank, I got 54.8 mpg yesterday.

Great run Darrell,
You have shown yourself and the rest of us what can be done with P&G in the Scion.
Nice work,
