Buy a truck - get a free AK-47

BUTLER, Mo. — Buy a truck and get a free AK-47 gun.

That's the deal a Missouri truck dealer is offering new customers who buy a pick-up truck in August.

Mark Muller, owner of Max Motors in Butler, says he knows people will be bothered by the promotion.

But not to worry, Muller is not handing out free guns. Instead, he will give buyers a voucher to use at a gun store after they obtain a license to carry a concealed weapon.

The AK-47 is an upgrade on a previous promotion in which Muller gave away vouchers for the price of a Caltec pistol.

The retail value of an AK-47 is $450 dollars but Muller says customers can spend their voucher on the gun of their choice.

I like him. If I needed a truck and I lived in Missouri I'd consider him as an option. - Dale

Re: Buy a truck - get a free AK-47

Like the reporter I find this disturbing. A handgun, I can kind of understand that. But an AK-47? That is over-kill. To me it seems like the dealer is having some problems selling cars and is doing this as a huge marketing gimmick to make sales.

Wonder how long it's going to be before one of the guns from this promotion are used in a crime or some other questionable activity and the public turn on this guy.

The guy's got imagination, and he's appealing to his market base.

The worries about the AKs and crime are silly. First of all, he's restricted the offer to folks who have a concealed carry permit, who have already been screened by law enforcement for criminal background, have had to take a class and pass an exam on state law regarding weapons and allowable use of deadly force, and training and a test on basic competency with the weapon. They've been fingerprinted and checked. A much safer and more responsible class of citizenry than average. Then they get run again through the Federal NICS system when they buy the gun. Finally, there's nothing more inherently dangerous or "criminal" about an AK than any other rifle. They just have visual styling that's come to be regarded as threatening by some, and the media have fueled the fire with exaggerated reporting. You won't find any "gang bangers" who've been through the legal system to acquire one of these. They'll get what they want regardless of the law, just as they do their drugs.

Re: Buy a truck - get a free AK-47

Hi Yaris Hilton:

___I am not a gun owner so take my comments from that perspective...

___I thought a large percentage of gun "deaths" were between family members who would have been pre-screened and registered? I have no idea but can you link or provide a few details regarding the statistics of registered gun owners or registered guns involved in crimes up to and including accidental shootings by others within a registered users household? I suspect it is far below highway deaths by at least 10:1 but I have no idea?

___Good Luck

___Wayne

Re: Buy a truck - get a free AK-47

A little background info:
Mark Muller happens to be the brother of "Mancow" Muller, one of the top morning radio talk show hosts in the nation.

They are heavy believers in Freedom of Speech, Right to Bear Arms, and all of the other freedoms set forth in the Constitution.

Max Motors sells ALL "American" vehicles.

Giving away a gun (or voucher for one) is nothing new in this area, and Mr. Muller is doing quite a bit to ensure the gun doesn't go to someone that shouldn't have it.

All he is giving is a voucher (think gift certificate), and even then you have to prove you can legally carry one concealed before you get the voucher (how easy is it to conceal an AK-47?). Even if someone else ends up getting the voucher, they still have to go to the gus store and get the gun (going through all the testing, training, background checks, etc.).

IMO just about anyone going to Max Motors for this promotion already has at least one gun. As Yaris Hilton said, the people getting guns through this promotion aren't the ones commiting crimes.

Re: Buy a truck - get a free AK-47

Fully automatic, selective fire assault rifle: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AK-47

Missouri gun laws:
Am I able to purchase a rifle or handgun? - After August 28, 2007 a person must only be approved through NICS for purchase of a firearm. The federally prohibitive criteria outlining the reasons an individual may be precluded from the transfer/possession of a firearm or firearm-related permit, pursuant to Title 18 U.S.C., §§ 922 (g) and (n), are as follows:

* A person convicted in any court of a crime punishable by imprisonment for a term exceeding one year, whether or not sentence is imposed. This includes misdemeanor offenses with a potential term of imprisonment in excess of two years, whether or not sentence was imposed.
* Persons who are fugitives of justice; for example, the subject of an active felony or misdemeanor warrant.
* An unlawful user and/or an addict of any controlled substance; for example, a person convicted for the use or possession of a controlled substance within the past year, or a person with multiple arrests for the use or possession of a controlled substance within the past five years with the most recent arrest occurring within the past year, or a person found through a drug test to use a controlled substance unlawfully, provided the test was administered within the past year.
* A person adjudicated mental defective or involuntarily committed to a mental institution or incompetent to handle own affairs, including dispositions to criminal charges pertaining to found not guilty by reason of insanity or found incompetent to stand trial.
* An alien illegally/unlawfully in the United States or a non-immigrant who does not qualify for the exceptions under Title 18 U.S.C. Section 922(y); for example, not have possession of a valid hunting license.
* A person dishonorably discharged from the United States Armed Forces.
* A person who has renounced his/her United States citizenship.
* The subject of a protective order issued after a hearing in which the respondent had notice that restrains them from harassing, stalking, or threatening an intimate partner or child of such partner. This does not include ex parte orders.
* A person convicted in any court of a misdemeanor crime which includes the use or attempted use of physical force or threatened use of a deadly weapon and the defendant was the spouse, former spouse, parent, guardian of the victim, by a person with whom the victim shares a child in common, by a person who is cohabiting with or has cohabited in the past with the victim as a spouse, parent, guardian or similarly situated to a spouse, parent or guardian of the victim.
* A person under indictment or information for a crime punishable by imprisonment for a term exceeding one year

Federal permit to own a fully automatic weapon:
Can I purchase a fully automatic rifle or pistol? - Possibly. First, a potential buyer must have a C&R FFL License. A C&R does not automatically grant you the right to acquire an automatic weapon. They are not illegal in Missouri but a specific procedure must be followed.

It has been unlawful since 1934 (The National Firearms Act) for civilians to own machine guns without special permission from the U.S. Treasury Department. Machine guns are subject to a $200 tax every time their ownership changes from one federally registered owner to another, and each new weapon is subject to a manufacturing tax when it is made, and it must be registered with the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms (BATFE) in its National Firearms Registry.

To become a registered owner, a complete FBI background investigation is conducted, checking for any criminal history or tendencies toward violence, and an application must be submitted to the BATFE including two sets of fingerprints, a recent photo, a sworn affidavit that transfer of the NFA firearm is of "reasonable necessity," and that sale to and possession of the weapon by the applicant "would be consistent with public safety." The application form also requires the signature of a chief law enforcement officer with jurisdiction in the applicant's residence.
Since the Firearms Owners' Protection Act of May 19, 1986, ownership of newly manufactured machine guns has been prohibited to civilians. Machine guns which were manufactured prior to the Act's passage are regulated under the National Firearms Act, but those manufactured after the ban cannot ordinarily be sold to or owned by civilians.

Source for above info: http://www.missouricarry.com/ click on FAQ.

Any law abiding, non violent American citizen over 21 years of age, without documented mental health issues has a real good chance of obtaining the necessary permits to own a pre 1986 fully automatic weapon.

These states allow class III gun ownership:
AL, AK, AZ, AR, CO, CT, FL, GA, ID, IN, KY, LA, ME, MD, MA, MN, MS, MO, MT, NE, NV, NH, NJ, NM, NC, ND, OH, OK, OR, PA, SC, SD, TN, TX, UT, VT, WV, WI, WY

The problem is not the legal owners of the weapons but the ability of criminals to get possession of these or any other type of firearms. Securing any weapon from accidental fire by the inexperienced or criminal theft is always the biggest safety concern.

It seems a lot of our stolen weapons are going to Mexico for the drug wars.

- Dale

However, note this also:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AK-47_legal_status
We aren't talking about the automatic versions of the weapon, but the semi-automatic version (semi-auto is one pull of trigger = one bullet).
Fully automatic weapons made after 1986 or imported after 1968 are illegal in the US.

That being said, if I did get the voucher, I would use it for some other type of gun (probably a Remington 870 Wingmaster 12g shotgun).
